Help me to get rid of old home appliances

Hey, there I brought a new refrigerator because the old one broke down. Now I am left with an old refrigerator and don't know what to do with it. Then I though about dumping it in the landfill, but I am concerned with the environmental issues that it will cause! So is there any better idea to get rid of the old refrigerator without harming nature?

You take it to a tip, or pay a company to responsibly dispose of it for you. Or find out if your council do bulky waste collections.

I should have said these options mean what can be recycled would be!

Take it to the recycling at the tip. And all places who sell electrical stuff have a legal obligation to recycle too (same with batteries 🔋and ink cartridges)

Your local council will probably do a bulk waste collection service, ours is £35 for up to 5 items and you’ll know it’ll be properly disposed of, not dumped somewhere, I’d try them first.

If it's still working, clean and serviceable offer it on freecycle or olio.

People need /want fridges for outside bars, storing tulip bulbs (it's a greening thing!) or if they have bugger all income and need a leg up.

Always worth offering it up.

Also ask british heart foundation - they will collect and rehire electrical appliances, but only of a certain quality.

Hope this helps.

Rehome , not re hire

HandScreen · 12/04/2022 07:53

The council does it. It is cheap.

HandScreen · 01/05/2022 19:22

The council will take it away for around £12

My council can take weeks to pick something up during which you have to leave the items to be collected outside your property. If you find the same applies where you are you can buy just a collection from appliances online and get a timed pick up slot within a couple of days. Cost is £20 and you know they will recycle/dispose per EU regulations. The company you bought your replacement should have offered you collection of the old appliance. They can charge for the cost of taking it but not for the cost of recycling.
