Cleaning bathroom cloths

localbunny · 11/04/2022 09:47

A while back I switched from disposable cleaning wipes to washable cloths in the bathroom, as I felt guilty about the single use element. I use 'pink for the sink/blue for the loo' and wash them at 90C. DH thinks that it would be okay to clean other household cloths (kitchen, general cleaning etc) with these in the washing machine, and says the hot temperature kills the germs. I see what he means but I just don't feel quite right about it somehow. Am I being ridiculous? How do other people handle their bathroom cloth washing please?!

I just wash everything (other than wool and other prescribed delicates) at 60°c.

Intheinterestsoffairness · 11/04/2022 10:00

I've never washed anything at 90. In fact I hardly ever go about 40. Maybe if you're all ill with D & V, you might want to use a high temperature, but otherwise toilets are pretty clean - much cleaner than other things in the house.

CaptainMyCaptain · 11/04/2022 10:05

Rinse them through and chuck them in with the rest of the washing at 40 degrees. Unless they are particularly foul then soak them first.

SushiShopSearch · 11/04/2022 12:30

I wouldn't wash them with other cloths..I'd wash the toilet one with knickers (which I wash separately) at 40. I do the same with any cloths I use on the floor...in with the black knickers.

Foxglovesandlilacs86 · 11/04/2022 13:16

Mine get chucked in with everything else at 60. I don't think my washer has a 90 setting, if it did I would use it on the whites but it just doesn't have one. I don't wash anything separately except for whits/colours.

ChairOfInvisibleStudies · 11/04/2022 13:18

I do mine at 60 with bath towels, kitchen clothes, tea towels, reusable nappies etc. Never had any issues with illness.

Mrsjayy · 11/04/2022 13:21

I wash cloths with towels at 60 are you really only washing a few cloths at 90 what a waste of water, just bung them in !

Mrsjayy · 11/04/2022 13:22

I do a 90 every few months to give the washing machine and pipes a clear out.

helpmum2003 · 11/04/2022 13:22

I wash at 60 with towels or work clothes

Noglassjustthebottleandastraw · 11/04/2022 13:24

I wash bathroom cloths themselves on a short half hour 30 wash.

localbunny · 11/04/2022 15:08

Thanks all, feel much better about it! Think I will start washing them with towels and other cloths then. Interesting to see how few people use the 90 setting - it must just be something I inherited from my Mum! I do clothes on a 30 or 40, so not totally barmy haha.

I do them at 60 with other towels / steam mop pad etc

NightmareSlashDelightful · 11/04/2022 15:11

Yeah I chuck mine in with other cleaning cloths and towels, the mop head etc, and do at 60 or 90.

WeirdlyKind · 11/04/2022 15:14

I wash mine at 60° with either towels or bedding. The whole point of a washing machine is to get things clean.

JunhaLamra · 11/04/2022 15:18

I use Dettol laundry for cleaning cloths and tumble dry them, kills all germs dead. I do kitchen cloths separately because there is enough for a load every week with hand towels and tea towels plus dishcloths whereas the cleaning cloths are every two weeks. I also made reusable floor mop cloths too.

I only do a 90 degree wash as a maintenance wash.

Mrsjayy · 11/04/2022 15:18

Dh is or was a plumber it was him that said about doing a 90 wash cleans out the pipes !

CMOTDibbler · 11/04/2022 15:28

I do a wash once a week at 60 with Napisan with all the microfibre cloths, mop heads and any other cleaning up stuff. The detergent will kill off any bacteria so no need to worry about that.

fizzyfood · 12/04/2022 20:52

Cleaner here, all cloths washed together at 60 degrees, that temperature is meant to kill germs.

Ablababla · 12/04/2022 20:54

I soak in napisan first then chuck in on a random wash

AnastasiaRomanov · 12/04/2022 20:58

I wash everything at 40 degrees. Never ill.

Cynderella · 12/04/2022 23:40

My machine has a quick 40deg wash that is a bit more expensive than the 30 deg, but it's marginal and results same, so 40deg is my everyday wash. I used to do a whites 60 deg wash every week, but in an effort to cut back on elec, I'm making those less frequent. And every couple of months, I do a 90deg wash - mainly for health of machine.

I don't think anything needs to be washed separately at 60 deg or above. At 40 deg, I'd be more careful with something really disgusting ot when there is illness about.

FiveShelties · 13/04/2022 09:45

@AnastasiaRomanov

This - towels and 'tough' stuff at 40 degrees and mixed fabrics at 30 degrees. Wool and delicates on cold.

Everything comes out clean and we are never ill either.

Anotherselfemployedcleaner · 13/04/2022 19:51

Cleaner here - my microfibre cloths/mop heads/e mop pads get washed at 40 degrees with a small amount of biological liquid and a capful of Dettol laundry sanitiser is the fabric conditioner compartment.

You are definitely doing the right thing to stop using disposable wipes … however, my personal preference is to not use microfibre cloths on the loo - 2 sheets of decent kitchen roll with spray are enough to wipe the whole thing down properly (including cistern, seat, lid, rim and pedestal) … maybe 3 sheets if particularly dirty, then these go straight in the bin.

I appreciate that this isn’t as eco friendly as using as a washable cloth. The cloths I use go into net bags and are hung up (so that they don’t start to smell/go mildewy). I run a full wash load every 3/4 days and really don’t want to rehandle cloths that have been used on loos or have them sitting around festering.

LolaStrange · 13/04/2022 19:55

I wouldn't feel comfortable putting bathroom clothes in with other stuff. I have a bucket that gets filled with bathroom clothes and mop heads and then goes on.

I use toilet paper to clean the toilet

Microfibres clothes are not environmentally friendly. They shed fibres that end up in the water system and don’t degrade.
