Pans for induction hob

My DS has just chosen his accomodation for University next year and the info booklet states that the kitchens have induction hobs.
I've never used one so don't know anything apart from the fact that you need specific pans.
Could anyone recommend a reasonable brand that's relatively inexpensive? I don't want to spend £100s really as I suspect they won't get terribly well looked after!
Also, I know you can't use normal pans on induction hobs, but can you use the induction pans on other kinds of hobs? Working on the principle that he'll only be in Halls for the first year and most student houses won't have induction hobs it would be good to get stuff that won't be useless after one year (assuming it doesn't get burned, lost or whatever before then of course!)
Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

IKEA do this set of pans for £35 and they're suitable for an induction hob.
They can also be used on other hobs too

I have an induction job and I didn’t get any new pans when I got it.

I think lots of ordinary pans are fine on induction.

We have the IKEA 365+ saucepans - they are v good quality & work on all hobs, we used them on gas before we switched to induction

They just have to be magnetic. As someone else pointed out, IKEA have cheap and cheerful pans that work on induction hobs.

Thanks all.I always forget about IKEA as there isn't one near us, but it looks like there's lots of the right kind of stuff there.

Sainsburys sell pans that work on induction hobs.

Use a fridge magnet, or any other magnet to check if your existing pans are magnetic. If so they are suitable for an induction hob.

Discretely take a magnet with you and check the pans if you are going to buy them second hand.

Tefal ingenio are great because they take up so little room. Induction hobs also seem popular when living out in subsequent years

EmmaGrundyForPM · 10/04/2022 05:44

Any pan with a magnetic base can be used on an induction hob. Ikea Pans are great. value.

I have a cheap set of Salter pans that I picked up in one of the supermarkets - about £35 if I remember rightly. They’ve been great and can be used on all types of job including induction 😊

Dammitthisisshit · 10/04/2022 06:01

Induction pans can always be used on a non-induction hob.
It’s just the other way round you need to watch.

IKEA is good.
I think it’s about £4 for delivery from ikea if you don’t order furniture, which is definitely worth it for a parcel of uni stuff if you don’t live nearby. Bedding etc also very reasonable if you need

PriamFarrl · 10/04/2022 06:19

Loads of pans are suitable for induction. So long as a magnet sticks to it then it’s ok.
