kitchen first then bathroom

LilRedWG · 08/01/2008 10:09

If I was going to do the whole house (which I admit is rare), I'd do it in this order:

  • Kitchen (so there's somewhere nice to make tea for breaks )
  • Bathroom/toilet
  • Bedrooms
  • Lounge
  • Dining room

Take 2 bin bags round with you - 1 for charity shop/shed or loft cos not used at the mo, the other bag for the bin. Be ruthless.

Start in the kitchen ( as others have said). Aim for clear surfaces - if you leave anything it will breed!

In bedrooms - make beds 1st. Instant improvement, and gives you somewhere to put things while you are moving around.

LOUD music!

fishie · 08/01/2008 10:17

take all the things into the rooms they belong in. if you haven't got homes for everything then you have a problem which can be solved by either getting more storage or getting rid of stuff..

in general i never go anywhere empty handed, find housework is mainly moving things from one part of house to another. depressing isn't it.

pyjamagirl · 08/01/2008 10:18

give yourself 15 mins ineach room you will be amazed how much you get done in 15 mins

Loud music good luck x

I always do the kitchen last. I start upstairs as that tends to be the easiest and when it is done and looks all tidy it gives me the kickstart I need to deal with the hideous rooms.

Just start on one room. Put everything away that goes in that room, have a box or basket or bag with you for everything that does not belong in that room. Finally hoover and dust.

And don't forget that all important final step: sit down and feel smug

Trix11 · 08/01/2008 11:03

Well I have done the kitchen - took an hour I still need to mop the floor but I will do that later as I will be in and out all day.

Bathroom next - that should not take long as I gave it a good bleaching on Saturday!

Thanks for all the tips and motivation ladies

am psyched up now!

Am going to start tho it is so peaceful with ds2 at nursery and poorly ds1 is downstairs watching a DVD.

But I must move my butt!!

Trix11 · 08/01/2008 11:33

Calzone it took an hour to get me moving but now Im flying. I have done the bathroom and filled a bag that came in the door weeks ago for Great Ormond Street Hospital - I have missed the collection but will look now to see if they are in the area again soon.

One room a day, my mother says

Trix11 · 08/01/2008 11:58

Sounds good 'One Room a day' but that would only work if you can keep the others tidy until its their turn for a good clean - and I cant [Blush]

I just wish I knew how to keep on top it.

the kitchen sink. shine it.
when you shine th esink , yo iwll end up doing th erest of the kitchen.
then the bathroom. whence you wil end up doin glaundry too.

Trix11 · 08/01/2008 12:04

Done the kitchen and bathroom but cant get motivated now to do the rest plus the three hours of ironing I have ahead!

OP posts:
cleaninglady · 08/01/2008 13:37

agree with starting in the kitchen and pukkas advice about the sink !! i go in intending to shine sink but first have to empty it! then realise i have to empty dishwasher before i can empty sink BUT when that is all done i finish the kitchen as it motivates me to do it!!

my housework is done on a little and often basis - i try to do stuff as i notice it rather than leave it for specific days - it would just build up to much and be harder to deal with IMO!
oh and get a IRobot Roomba! its has helped me no end as he goes about vacumming the carpets upstairs while i sort downstairs then comes down after i have finished cleaning downstairs!

hana · 08/01/2008 13:38

I start with the smallest room first

Trix11 · 08/01/2008 14:09

Ive done an hour and a half of Ironing - starting to look better.

I was thinking of getting one of those Roombas actually. Do they work on wooden floor as will be changing the carpets in the summer to wooden flooring. I suppose you have to have clear floors for them to work Do they move from room to room?
