Solid base liner for wire pull out baskets - do these exist?

We have had some new pull out baskets installed in our kitchen and I’m wondering if there is any sort of solid base that can be purchased to line the basket? I tend to use these for things like onions and it’s annoying when there is nothing to catch the bits of onion skin, or other small things falling through.

I’ve tried searching online but can only find ones with built in bases.

I use baskets in mine for the same reason. Couldn't find anything better so be interesting to hear other suggestions. X

What size are they? I'd be tempted to use a placemat or worktop saver / thin chopping board if they're the right size. Or cut cork to size (may absorb the onion smell though).

You can buy rolls of drawer liner stuff from ikea. You could just use a tea towel and wash it when it gets grubby.

SunnyUpNorth · 29/03/2022 10:39

Sorry I forgot I had started this!

Don’t want to use a tea towel or anything floppy as I don’t want it hanging down, being untidy etc.

I probably could use one of the large flexible chopping boards they have in ikea, although the existing ones I have are bright red and green and I would prefer a neutral colour.

I had two of these wire basket drawers in my old kitchen but they were spaced a bit more and I used smaller baskets within them but I wouldn’t have the height for that now between the new baskets if that makes sense.

Ideally I want something like a sheet of Perspex that could be ordered to size. I’m sure that must be possible, I might have a search for that sort of thing. I’ll report back if I have any luck.

You can order Perspex on eBay to any size. I changed a glass frame to perspex in our nursery for safety.

You can buy cloth sacks for potatoes that could also be used for other veg.

I use flexible chopping boards that I cut to size and sometimes foil oven dishes

Do you know anyone with a 3D printer who could print exactly the right size? Perspex is good but I think you will need a slight lip around the edge. I'm picturing your onion skin wafting as you open the cupboard and sailing down the back of the space.

SunnyUpNorth · 30/03/2022 09:12

Wafting onion skin is such a hindrance 😂

Yes I was looking at Perspex on eBay yesterday.

What I really need is the sort of tray that you get in the base of dog crates. Strong but light, has a lip, easy removal for cleaning. I need to find the perfect sized tray!

I think the thing is that the baskets are intended to let air circulate and a bit of plastic would stop that happening? You'd be better off cutting a bit of Hessian or something to size and sticking it in.

hedgehoglurker · 30/03/2022 10:51

Perhaps a baking tray?

AngularMouse · 18/01/2023 21:56

Did anyone ever find anything for this? It’s exactly the problem I’m having!@SunnyUpNorth

Theoldwrinkley · 18/01/2023 22:13

A double thickness of broadsheet newspaper. Added advantage is if you get an 'iffy' onion which leaks onion juice you just change the paper. I use drawers like this for keeping the bits of my kenwood in, and invariably the beater attachments poke through. A sheet of newspaper/cardboard cut to size works well.

SunnyUpNorth · 18/01/2023 22:19

No sorry I didn’t! I have three. I’ve kind of made peace with it but I think you would be able to find either a tray the right size or a large strong mat to fit and provide a base.

@SunnyUpNorth So pleased you made peace with it! I’m still annoyed. Am thinking of getting the Perspex cut to size - looks like about £11 per basket.

I’ve had these pull outs for years but am changing the runners to improve them (hopefully). They e always annoyed me, and the base of the cupboard is always a mix of spilled jam, oil and flour - nice!
