Red spots on body. Bed bugs?

Woke up this morning and discovered 7 red spots, 2 on wrist the rest on my thigh. This happened once before, a few months ago I think. Have attached pics, what do you think?

I've chucked my bedding in the wash for now. Haven't inspected mattress but it's old and needing replaced soon anyway so if I need to chuck it it's fine. Bed is one of those fake leather sleigh beds that lift up so you can store things inside it. Had it for years. No kids or pets live here. I bought a new rug recently but that's it.

I feel so gross and embarrassed. Any tips or advice? Thanks.

Unlikely to be bed bugs.
Was the rug new ? As they look like flea bites, but could also be mosquitoes.

Yes brand new from Ian Snow, I had my eye on it for about a year before I got it so I hope it didn't have stowaways!

What makes you think fleas instead of bed bugs?

Bed bugs are more common than they used to be but normally brought in from a second hand bed, or from luggage put on the bed if you have been on holiday somewhere with bedbugs. They don’t travel around easily, they need to be brought in. Much more likely to be a cat or dog flea (have you visited a friend with a cat ?) which won’t become a problem in your house as they can’t live on people. Or a flying insect of some sort, eg a Mozzie. Too early for a Blandford fly, the bites are horrendous (unlike yours) and you would normally get bitten near water, not in your house.

Haven't been on holiday recently. No friends or family have pets, the last time DH and I were near any animals was at a dog cafe in November. Was out a walk with a friend last weekend and she'd been with a friend who has cats the previous weekend but not sure if fleas could be spread that way?!

Never heard of blandford flies shudder
