Cleaners and Insurance?

We are currently with an agency and are looking for a cheaper independent cleaner going forward to save some money as I am about to go on mat leave.

Is anyone able to share how they deal with the insurance element of this please? Obviously agency cleaners are covered insurance wise but it seems a lot of cheaper independant cleaners do not seem to have insurance.

We don't have anything of value that I am worried about them breaking or anything like that. I am more worried that they break themselves and then they sue us! We would like to be covered in the worst case scenario.

I can't add them to my home insurance or seem to be able to take a new standlone policy to cover domestic staff. It seems some sort of employers liability insurance is the closest match but that seems over the top!

There are some super old posts on this topic but no clear conclusion. It seems the simple answer is pay up for agency and be covered but please do share if there is a smarter way forward!

I'm a cleaner (self employed) and I have public liability insurance. It's not that expensive

Cleaner here, my public liability costs about £7 a month.

I’ve never used a cleaner without insurance, not worth the risk.

Thanks everyone. Sounds like I just need to keep searching until I find someone who simply does have insurance. Does anyone have any recommendations on where to search? I’ve tried next door and Facebook groups without any luck!

Ask a friend or colleague for a recommendation.

Is it recommended to ask to see the cleaner's insurance details when you hire them, or take it on good faith?

fizzyfood · 12/04/2023 17:35

If anyone asked to see mine, I'd be happy to show them my insurance certificate, if you asked someone and they refused alarm bells would start ringing!

If you have household contents insurance you should already have liability insurance. Ask your insurer or broker (or post your policy wording here)
