Mismatched crockery

I have somehow ended up with lots of mismatched crockery. I don’t mean that every plate is different - but e.g. four dinner platter and four side plates from one set snd then pasta bowls from another set etc. They are all nice and similar style - but is that terrible? I could replace them but it feels like it would wasteful…. (And no, I don’t have formal dinner parties for 12…)

Yes, terrible. No, of course not. In the past, I have thought about 'sets' and even had some that were in use a while, but I now have second hand from a junk shop I couldn't resist, pasta bowl from Ikea and various other pieces. I've come to prefer it.

Yes - that’s how it happened in my case! Bought a set, got given some nice bowls as a present, got some lovely bargains from a charity shop…

Mine are a mix
Not getting rid of perfectly good crockery.

PrettyBluebells · 25/02/2022 23:22

I won't get rid but I'm totally bored with plain white. I thought getting white would mean I could but new without worrying too much about the mismatch. It's just so bloody boring now. I want done prettier ones now, lol

CoffeeCakeChill · 25/02/2022 23:27

Its much better to have built a collection up organically over time. Gifts inherited etc- matchy is not a good look!

Notcontent · 26/02/2022 12:02

I agree about all white being boring. I went through a stage when I thought having everything in the house really plain was the way forward, but it does get boring.

I agree that matchy isn't a good look - it's old fashioned.

londonmummy1966 · 02/03/2022 00:53

I took the decision to go for a floral mismatched look when DC were little - that and a clumsy DH meant there was little point in trying to keep a matching set - if something got broken it wasn't the end of the world as I could replace (usually from a charity shop). Now DC are 18 & 19 I have bought a matching dinner service for best but day to day remains the mismatched stuff.

Deathraystare · 02/03/2022 09:29

I prefer mis-matched. If I ever got my own place I would do this anyway. It looks better I think if it is ornate - floral patterns I think.

Deathraystare · 02/03/2022 09:30

The reason I say in my own place is I only live in one room so cannot really entertain!!

BoodleBug51 · 02/03/2022 09:34

I have always had sets, but this time decided that I couldn't be arsed. So everything is Denby but in all variations of colour and pattern. Drives DH mad as he can't deal with it, but it works for me as I'm not ever worried if something breaks. My favourite is the halo speckle.

Added to that are Emma Bridgewater plates/bowls for the grandkids, and I've got some really expensive glass plates/bowls that I use for special puddings as I hate the Denby side plates, they're ridiculously small.

Tillsforthrills · 02/03/2022 09:35

Agree with @CoffeeCakeChill

A mismatched, inherited (or acquired) is much better than a matching set.

YoungBritishPissArtist · 02/03/2022 09:39

My crockery and cutlery is a total mishmash. Hate everything matching, I don’t live in the suburbs.

crossstitchingnana · 02/03/2022 09:39

But if you want it all to match then when a few pieces are broken do you chuck it out and get new? Seems wasteful to me.

User76745333 · 02/03/2022 09:45

I have a pretty delicate white set for entertaining (wedding present 20 years ago) but then I’ve deliberately mismatched my daily use stuff. It’s all blue and white but the original set is heavily supplemented by non matching but coordinating stuff.

Sunnysidegold · 06/03/2022 11:36

I bought a set from asda in our first house that was blue and white and then inherited my grandma's day to day dinner set which is also blue and white. Now I just top off with things I like in blue white combinations. So it's mismatched but tonal.

My husband only noticed the other day : "nothing is from the same set but it's all the same colour so it looks nice"
