Slow ignition on gas hob

BlueHotel · 23/02/2022 12:52

I have a 5 burner Beko gas hob. All the burners except one (back RHS) take more than 25 seconds to ignite properly - by which I mean that the gas is flowing, the flames are as they should be, but if I stop pressing the control knob sooner than that, I have to start all over again. The good one ignites instantly. The hob is less than a year old, but it was purchased by the previous occupants (who tell me they never had that problem). It is in excellent condition, very clean, no clogged up vents and the functioning burner doesn't look any different from the others. Has anybody else had this experience and can offer advice? I'm trying to avoid an inevitably expensive repair if possible.

Use a gas lighter for that burner maybe

I did try that (and it's 4 out of 5 that are slow, only one is ok) - but it doesn't make any difference. As soon as I take my finger off the control knob, the gas stops flowing and the flames go out.

Get a gas engineer, the bit that sparks may be worn out, have you recently deep cleaned your hob? The sparking bit may be damp, mine does it if for example something has boiled over, also check the electrical connection, is it hard wired or plug in.

mine does this, my son says i should turn it right down then up again and it stays lit but not sure myself

nearlyspringyay · 23/02/2022 14:31

Have you cleaned it recently? Either full of gunk and needs to be cleaned or damp from being cleaned

dementedpixie · 23/02/2022 14:36

So the burner lights straight away but doesn't stay on once you take the pressure back off the knob?

BlueHotel · 23/02/2022 14:43

nearlyspringyay (lovely topical nn) - I've cleaned and dried, several times, I'm sure it's clean and dry
dementedpixie yes, that's correct. You've phrased it better than I did

Nitgel OMG!! Your son is right, it works. You should try it. Can't believe it's so simple. Ask him why, I'd like to know. And thank you for passing it on.

Nitgel Just to let you know it's still working, I thank you and your son every day. It was so annoying!
