Getting rid of old mobile phones - help needed!

Apologies in advance for my ignorance… Having a clearout I’ve found 5 old mobiles none of which will even turn on so I can’t do a hard reset to wipe them clean of data. If I remove batteries and sims and dispose of them separately will my privacy/security be safe?

Do you want to just dispose of them? Or sell?
They are massively recyclable and full of useful materials. You should take them to a mobile phone shop

can't answer your original question but oxfam stores accept phones for recycling if you are looking for a means of disposing of them

Any data you had stored on the phone eg phone numbers could be accessed by someone who could power the system or recover the storage chip (harddrive)
Same with any open message apps or downloaded documents, or photos, or any automatic password storage and fill option etc. etc.

Below is a random company which offers the service
datarecovery.london/android-data-recovery-specialists/

Disposing the 5 phones
•together: allows 1 group an opportunity to access all the data
•separate: allows 5 different groups an opportunity to access the 1/5 of the data.

If you are concerned about data leakage a large hammer ⚒ plus heat🔥should ensure total physical destruction
