Coverless duvet - what do I need to know?

I've just invested in a new mattress and I'm so excited I've spent the last hour online looking for all sorts of lovely things to put on it. I'm really tempted by a coverless duvet but I have never met anyone with one.

Can anyone shed any light - are they a con? Do I need to have a tumble dryer? Are they nice? How often do I need to wash it? Do they make them for superking beds? Any brand recommendations?

So many questions, but I feel like it must make life simpler somehow?

I would be grateful for any advice!

We have them for the kids and we use them in summer only. The ones we have are from Jysk and are in bright colours. I wash them once a week usually because its just so quick! They're really good. I don't know if you would be able to wash a thick superking one yourself though? Maybe a summer one though.

We use them when we go away in the caravan but that is mostly in the summer, I'm not sure I would want to use one regularly in the winter as you would need a thicker one and drying it would be more awkward. Also thick one might not fit very well in washer or dryer. In the summer they are great though as just put out on line to dry

Oooh -never heard of these -going off to
Investigate!

Surely that's just an eiderdown. Like they had in the olden days.

Then someone invented the duvet cover and people were thrilled as they didn't have to wash and dry the whole thing.

This ! Glad I’m not the only one who thinks this is the emperors new clothes 😂

Everyone will be back to using a top and bottom sheet so they don’t have to wash them all the time !

PurBal · 15/02/2022 07:30

They’re just rebranded comforters / eiderdowns so I’d use with a sheet to reduce the need for laundering.

Notagoodnight · 15/02/2022 07:31

The good bits: They are really easy to wash and clean but I only have a single.
The bad bits:They are colder than your equivalent normal duvet and my son still prefers a regular one. I bung all my duvets in the washing machine in their covers anyway so with a well fitting one I'm not sure it makes a difference anyway.

So the situation is, use with a flat sheet so you don't have to wash it so often and also with an extra blanket on top as they are not very warm.

Literally the bedding of our grandparents! Your mangle will be doing overtime come washday OP.

They are great in caravans and motorhomes in the summer as you would probably use a sleeping bag anyway which would need washing and I wouldn't want a normal duvet with cover as these are easier to move around.

This wouldn't work for my son as he is mucky and will spill all sorts on his duvet, the flat sheet wouldn't do much. It is a solution though, just perhaps not the all-encompassing solution.

I've got one since seeing a thread on here and I love it. It's definitely not colder than a normal duvet I find the opposite actually even though its a lower tog rating. It fits in the washing machine fine and I hang it to dry, it takes less than 2 hours to dry. I wash it every fortnight. Mine is a king size one from Amazon.

HeadToToesNo · 15/02/2022 18:10

My goodness, the 'emperor's new clothes' comment is actually spot on, I'm so embarrassed I didn't see that myself!

Time to get online and look for a new duvet and some nice new sheets Grin

I love mine. We use them all year round, no one gets cold.
I wash them weekly on a normal 60 wash. Hang it over the banister and it’s dry in 2 hours. You can tumble dry them but I rarely do.
I much prefer it to changing 5 duvet covers every week…..

I had to smile the other day when I saw Andrex said “new” paper wrapping. Toilets rolls were always wrapped in paper.
