Restoring scorched wood.

Our hob is set into the angle of a corner of the kitchen with a triangular shelf behind. Somehow the wooden edge has got scorched from a hot pan on the hob. Have tried Ajax powder which has lessened the colour but it is still obvious, especially since the wood of the kitchen is limed. Do we have to sand it back to get rid or is there a magic solution ?

You may be able to wire brush the area and 're-lime' it (either buy special liming wax, or mix clear wax with white powder paint).
Or if the wood just needs to be a bit lighter you could bleach it (you'll have to use a special wood bleaching agent, which you can get from woodworking suppliers, it has to be washed off with vinegar, and is really stinky!).
