How do I remove the smell of dead mouse from under the floorboards?

A mouse (I prefer to think mouse than anything else) has expired under the floorboards resulting in a terrible pong in the hall. What can I do to remove the not-very-christmassy smell emanating therefrom?

I wanted to post under 'ethical' thread for the furry little friends but chemical warfare being the likely solution I'm taking a GH line: Any suggestions?

You could try cutting quinces in half and leaving them in the room to soak up the smell; just throw them out when they start to dry up after a few days. Plenty hanging untouched in people's front gardens at this time of year....

Look, I'd never swipe grapes, okay?

winestein · 31/12/2007 10:02

I'd remove the dead mouse...

alibag · 31/12/2007 10:03

nor sweetcorn as you'd get shot by the (french) farmer...

I will look out for quince (like plums?) in the neighbourhood.

Can't see the mouse, that's the problem! I've had one of the floorboards up but couldn't see the culprit.

we had this a few weeks ago, and nearly ripped up the floor, but couldnt find the mouse
the smell disappeared after a week or so
its bloody rank, isnt it

alibag · 31/12/2007 10:10

It is rank. I have been sniffing shoes to see if someone trod in something, I have been checking under/behind sofas/radiators.... almost convinced myself that it was the christmas tree rotting

it will go away, but its whether you can put up with it in the meantime
ours didnt really last all that long
we just stopped lifting floorboards in the end

alibag · 31/12/2007 10:16

I will burn some incense and let nature take its course - I can handle it if it diminishes over the next week (but it is a bit embarrassing when people come in the front door!)

it's awful and when i t happened here took ages (months, really) to go away- depends on size of corpse (which you may not want to think about) and speed of drying- it will mummify down there if you can't move it- ours seemed to be under an interior wall- anyway, best thing we found was lavender oil in saucers of water. good luck.

purplemonkeydishwasher · 31/12/2007 13:04

we used incense when we had a corpse under our floorboards. not mcuh else you can do. i completely sympathise!

reikizen · 31/12/2007 13:20

Tbh if you can smell it, it is probably a rat. Sorry.

littlerach · 31/12/2007 13:24

We have had the pong too, but ours is a rat.

We have burnt lots of candles! And had windows open when possible.

It gets worse when the heating is on.

alibag · 31/12/2007 15:59

I will hand DH a torch when he gets home - if it is a rat I'd rather find & remove it! I'll go & find the lavender oil.
Thanks for all tips!

Even a mouse will absolutely reek for quite a long time. Unless you can move the body it will continue to pong for several months.

purpleduck · 31/12/2007 16:12

mice can let off a pretty big stink too

Blu · 31/12/2007 16:16

Have some fly spray in the house.

For obvious reasons, which I won't expand upon for the sake of the squeamish.
