Please recommend a good clothes airer/clothes horse

With energy bills on the rise looking to avoid using our drier. I have been researching alternative ways to dry clothes. In good weather I dry outside.

I have ruled out heated airer as people here and a friend have indicated that they are not all that. So, have decided to go down normal clothes airer route and possibly have dehumidifier in room.

So can anyone recommend a good airer that is big enough to hold lots of things but can be folded up quite neatly when not in use. Thanks

I have 2 like these. The tower one can't really take towels or jeans so I put them on the other one

We have a foldable one with wheels from Amazon - when it’s warm and dry outside I shove it out the door and it’s really easy to bring in. Get the best of both worlds as the laundry gets a chance to have some fresh air (and we don’t have to look at it inside all the time)

Not what you are asking, (or want to hear) but heated ones are AMAZING Grin the wheelie one is just an overflow

Don’t rule out heated. Our Lakeland one is EXCELLENT. But lie things flat in layers and use the cover otherwise it’s inefficient

Jewel1968 · 05/02/2022 17:21

Thanks all. My friend has the Lakeland one and she says it takes ages to dry and causes a lot of moisture in the house which leads to mould problems. That's what made me think of dehumidifier which I think I read someone on here suggesting too.

IKEA have great dryers I have three Grin

Have you got an eco setting on your tumble? I find it costs very little.. personally I don’t want clothes drying in the house all winter due to possible moisture (and needing to leave windows open)

Inspectorslack · 05/02/2022 17:41

I have that same IKEA one and it is fantastic.

Namechangesagain · 05/02/2022 17:47

I have a normal clothes airer and a dehumidifier which works amazingly. Also open a window and close the door to that room so we don't all freeze!!

PickAChew · 05/02/2022 17:50

We have this one.

With an incontinent teen, our tumble dryer gets a lot of use as we wouldn't have anywhere to put it all and it would generate a lot of moisture and damp. It's a standard condenser dryer but our bills plummeted when we bought it to replace a condenser dryer that had stopped drying things very well (to the point that it was wearing holes in things, so more than just energy was saved). I do have things that either can't be tumble dried or I prefer not to tumble dry, though, so I have this set up in front of the tumble dryer, by a window I can open, so it makes the most of the heat generated. Also handy for drying thick things like the waistbands of joggers, rather than tumbling them for longer.

PickAChew · 05/02/2022 17:51

to replace a heat pump dryer, that should be. Turns out that they're only more efficient until they're not any more. We've not seen any lost in performance of this one in the 20 months we've had it, on the other hand.

Jewel1968 · 05/02/2022 19:32

Yeah I do use eco setting on drier. Perhaps it doesn't use as much electricity as I thought. I will have to monitor a bit. We have very high electricity bills and that is before the hike and assumed the oven and drier were likeliest culprits.

Will check out all recommended airer so thanks Smile

@Namechangesagain with the dehumidifier, how long does it take typically to dry stuff?

OP posts:
Namechangesagain · 05/02/2022 19:41

Obviously depends on the general temperature of the house as well but around 5 hours

Jewel1968 · 05/02/2022 19:51

@Namechangesagain that is pretty impressive....

I have several of the wooden slim line airers from Lakeland. They are expensive and don't hold a lot, but they look nice and that makes me happy as they are up most days. I also think if you go too big things don't dry property. I used to use the heated rack but it's bulky and I think it raises the humidity quite a bit I now find several smaller racks spaced around the house with decent ventilation works better and is almost as quick as the heated rack without using electricity. I'm thinking of getting a dehumidifier to speed things up a bit on damp days...

Boriswentcamping · 05/02/2022 22:24

*don't dry properly

Summerofcontent · 05/02/2022 22:28

I have one of these used with a dehumidifier that has a dry clothes setting.

I have the same one as @dementedpixie. It's generally good but can damage if super heavy things are put on it.

I had a heated airer from Lakeland and it's created a lot of mould issues in the house and was expensive to run. We've just redecorated and had to treat the mould. Never again.

SpikeySmooth · 05/02/2022 22:32

We live in a flat and yy open the window to room where the clothes are being aired or you get condensation. We also run a dehumidifier but only to finish off the clothes when slightly damp because they can be pricey to run.

Notcontent · 06/02/2022 01:06

I have the brabantia version of the IKEA one and it’s great - I use it with a dehumidifier. I do put it outside when the weather allows. The other day when it was windy my sheets dried in a couple of hours!

Jewel1968 · 06/02/2022 10:09

Thanks all. Those of you that use a dehumidifier could you share what one you use. ThanksSmile

I have eBac dehumidifiers- really good and made in the uk.
The other recommendation is that if you can find anywhere to put up a ceiling pulley drier (known as Sheila's maid) stuff will dry really quickly on there as any hot air rises anyway.
Im lucky in that I have high ceilings but I can fit at least two loads on mine and it mostly dries overnight
