Help - new washing machine has torn my sofa cover

Mogs43 · 30/01/2022 17:07

What should I do? I had an accident this morning and put one of the sofa seat cushions in the wash. I washed it according to the instructions on the label - at 30 on a hand wash. I have just taken it out and it has come apart /torn at both side seems. What on earth am I going to do? I have washed the sweat covers before but it was an older machine (I have just recently got a new one from John Lewis). Am gutted - today has been a terrible day. Please can you help? Thank you

I doubt it was the washing machine that tore the seat cover. I suspect the seams have become weakened damaged from being washed a few times before. What sort of washing machine is it?

Nsky · 30/01/2022 17:11

Prob was worn, maybe throw? What else can I say

insancerre · 30/01/2022 17:14

Hand wash on a label means to hand wash not in the washing machine

Justkeeppedaling · 30/01/2022 17:18

I've never heard of anyone putting seat covers in the washing machine before.

Mogs43 · 30/01/2022 17:19

It was a Bosch washing machine- cost nearly £1k. It looks like the seams have come undone. It does have a hand wash option on the machine but I didn't realise that I shouldn't use it. Eek - how do other people wash sofa seat cushions?

Not sure what, if anything I can do now? Do you think somewhere might be able to repair it? I bought the sofa from heals and it cost a fortune.

Hand wash means no machines at all. I wash mine by hand in lukewarm water and then hang them to try. Or I send them to the drycleaner to do it when I can’t be arsed.

Treecreature · 30/01/2022 17:22

We stick ours in the machine weekly (dogs and children). Maybe try a seamstress for repairs?

Mogs43 · 30/01/2022 17:23

I had an accident once before and called my best friend and she said she puts her sofa seat covers in the wash - I didn't realise that you shouldn't. I have done it once before when I had another accident and it seemed okay (but obviously not). Lesson learnt on that. Any ideas on how I might repair the seat cover? Do you think one of the invisible meaning companies might be able to assist?

Don't the dogs and children mind being bundled into the machine? Surely a bath is easier? Grin

insancerre · 30/01/2022 17:29

Maybe invest in some rubber sheeting if you are having a lot of accidents

VariationsonaTheme · 30/01/2022 17:33

I’ve always put mine in the machine to wash and they’re still intact 14 years later. I’m not sure how the machine has made the seams come apart, unless they were already weak.

Treecreature · 30/01/2022 17:33

@Justkeeppedaling Grin hilarious mental image right now

BusterGonad · 30/01/2022 17:35

Take it to a seamstress, and one that isn't torn, they may be able to make a new one out of plain fabric then stitch the left overs on top so it kind of looks the same! I mention a non torn one as they may need it to make a pattern. Also, I'd recommend maybe getting some puppy pads or something, putting it under a throw and sitting in that if you're having troubles in the toilet department.

ApolloandDaphne · 30/01/2022 17:37

I do all my hand washing on the hand wash cycle on my Bosch. Everything comes out perfectly.

Did the covers say on the label they were washable?

Mogs43 · 30/01/2022 17:51

The cover on the label said they were washable - max temp 30, so I put them on the hand wash cycle. I don't know what has gone wrong. I would have thought they would be well-made coming from Heals but who knows - weren't cheap!

I will try and find a seamstress tomorrow and also take the one that is in tact.

Embarrassingly it was actually a period stain rather than a puppy! Feel like I'm about 13! - have never had such heavy ones. Embarrassing. I did soak the stain in cold water beforehand so maybe it was just all too much?

Will be glad when today is over!

A throw over seats, easy to wash, keeps things for longer, why I love leather

ToffeeForEveryone · 30/01/2022 19:18

Contact the company that made the sofa and see if you can buy spares?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 30/01/2022 19:36

I wash our Ikea covers , they are machine washable though.

My old WM could turn clothes inside out in the wash - I wash everything inside out except sock , this machine could flip things back the right way, so goodness knows what went on in the drum Shock

Mogs43 · 30/01/2022 19:50

Thank you for your helpful responses.

I did have a throw on the sofa but it went through. I will try and track down a seamstress tomorrow (am in London so hopefully wont be too hard?) and if not will contact the manufacturers. Fingers crossed!

Worst case there are ndependent companies who will make new made to measure covers.

BusterGonad · 30/01/2022 20:20

What a nightmare. Good luck with it!
