Does anyone have any advice for a horrible rotten egg smell when I first turn the dishwasher on?

Tried vinegar doesn’t really do anything!

Thanks

Have you taken the filters out, cleaned them and run a dishwasher cleaner through it on hot?

I put one of these through monthly but do clean the filter after each load or I can smell rotten eggs on any dishes washed in the next load!

Home bargains sell a reasonably priced dishwasher cleaner, I’ve just tried the fairy one which is also pretty good but was cheaper in home bargains than Ocado.

I never buy the finish one, I didn’t find it any good.

I just run mine on max heat and empty every couple of months with a cupful of soda crystals chucked in. Clean out the filter thing in the bottom too.

Remove every single component that can be unscrewed including the swinging "arms" at the top and all the plastic bits around the filter. Then soak everything in warm water and bleach for an hour. Rinse thoroughly, place in sink and pour boiling water over it to thoroughly disinfect. Replace the components and run the machine again (empty) using the hottest setting and one of those small bottles designed for cleaning dishwashers.

This worked for me after dealing with a repulsive dishwasher with a smell we just couldn't get rid of. It turned out that some of the plastic components had some type of mold growing on it that was resistant to heat or just stank anyway. Running the machine on hot never helped and it was only the bleach that did it.

It could be the drains rather than the dishwasher too.

It could be the drain, we had gurgling in the dishwasher pipes and checked the drain and a load of leaves were blocking it.

Workinghardeveryday · 29/01/2022 05:35

Thank you all. I did wonder about soda crystals to clean the pipes out. I really feel it’s the pipes not the dishwasher inside.

It won’t break it will it?!

Soda crystals/ bicarbonate for the drains
Second hot wash with a bowl of vinegar ans also some lemons cut in chucks and set in

But yeah, a closer look at the drain probs needed

I will try the soda crystals, how much do I put in and where about?

Then will follow with the vinegar, thanks 😁

Is the piping linked to the kitchen sink? Then try putting drain cleaner down the sink.

Otherwise I would recommend cleaning the filter and doing a hot wash with washing soda. I also give it a good clean as lots of gunk can collect around the doors, crevices.

Workinghardeveryday · 29/01/2022 07:28

@silentpool yes the pipes are linked to the kitchen sink, but the sink is fine. The smell is definitely from the pipes and comes up the kitchen sink when I put the dishwasher on.

If I do a hot wash with vinegar it does help but not for long. I will do the soda crystals, not sure where to put it and how much?

It might be the trap needs cleaning out if it's joined to the sink, our sink smelt and DH ended up putting a new trap and associated plastic pipework on, a trip to Screwfix might be needed as sometimes replacement is better if it has to be taken apart.

Workinghardeveryday · 29/01/2022 08:00

Oh no! Sounds like I need to get a plumber in.....

It seemed quite easy to do, our waste trap is just in the cupboard under the sink so cupboard was emptied, we got a large bucket and put all the plastic parts in tha and caught any dirty water, they were filthy so we replaced them with similar parts from Screwfix or if you didn't want to get new parts you could clean them. You don't get much water mess as it is drainage rather than water pipes

SoupDragon · 29/01/2022 14:01

I started pouring boiling water down my sink every time I made a cup of tea and that has reduced the smell significantly.
