Donating clothes with name labels

We're finally sorting through all DS's old clothes from the loft, and the vast bulk are going to charity. DS is nearly 8, and is not only a PFB, but an only grandchild on both sides so had a LOT of clothes, and there is a huge amount being donated.

All his old school and nursery clothes have name labels, which I'd like to remove before the clothes go. We used Stikins sticky labels, so the label itself can't be easily removed as they are pretty much welded to the fabric.

Where it's possible to cut the label out but still leave the size and washing instructions intact I've done that, but I've still got a huge bag where cutting the label out would mean losing one or both.

Should I:

  1. scribble over the name with a Sharpie (DH's solution)?
  2. cut out the label anyway, it isn't that important?
  3. stop over thinking it and just leave them as they are?

Stikins can be removed but I just put a line through the name with a black sharpie.

Stop overthinking it.
I got a cute WhatsApp message from a mum in Nigeria who had been given one of DD dresses by a family member who'd bought it in a UK charity shop, it had DD name and my phone no.
It was charming.

Yes, I've peeled some out before, Cornish, when I've donated old logo cardigans to the school. While I know it's possible, I also know it's a pain, and given the size of the pile, I'm reluctant.

That's so cute, drspouse!

I think I'll try and persuade DH we can just not worry about it, otherwise I'll set him to work with a sharpie and see how quickly he changes his mind

I'd just draw a line through it with a fabric sharpie. Though DS only had names in school jumpers coats, and clothes taken to camp.

Regularsizedrudy · 23/01/2022 14:14

I’d just leave them. Surely no harm can be done?

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 23/01/2022 14:17

Yes, Regular - that was my thought. It's DH that is being very particular about it.

Tell him to sort it out then!

Snoopsnoggysnog · 23/01/2022 14:28

I think over thinking it, does he have a very unusual name or something?

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 23/01/2022 14:45

Not very unusual, no - but not exactly John Smith either.

I don’t really see the issue either. DH was so insistent I thought I was missing something, but perhaps I'm not. He does have form for being way too over protective generally.

Can you iron them then peel? I'd sharpie them personally (to appease DH)

MaizeAmaze · 23/01/2022 15:59

I ironed off our iron-in labels. But we have a surname that usually puts us as the only one in the school, and probably one of a handful in the area.
I'd also cut off washing instructions - but not sizes.
