I'm moving soon and have a house full of random stuff from fleeing DV in a hurry. My kids are now at uni and I want my next home to feel way more calm and organised. Also, I am having to pack and move everything on my own and so it's a mammoth task and the less crap I take with me the better. Can anyone suggest where I start or how to get ruthless with culling stuff as I'm sat looking at boxes and feeling overwhelmed! Thanks for any suggestions!

It helps me if I put stuff on our local freecycle site. I don't feel so bad about getting rid of it if I know it's going to someone who will use it and give it a good home.

Good luck with the move. My advice is pick a timespan and if not used in that timespan then set aside for sale/charity/recycle/bin. Start at 12 months and see how much stuff comes out. If not enough switch to 6 months. Be ruthless.

Sit down with a cuppa and watch sort your life out on iolayer.

Where is the stuff in your house spread around or boxes? If spread around I would try and round it up an go by categories eg all book together on the floor. For every item ask yourself will this be good for my new fabulous life? Shall I bring it with me?

Watch Joshua Becker on minimalism. Absolutely inspring and very short and to the point.

@Forfamily123 - thank you, hadn't heard of this programme. I love The Home Edit and sure I'll enjoy a British organising show.

I like lists. So I'd make a list of eg what clothes/shoes/coats you need, choose them and pack them, bag up the rest and take to charity shop.

Another list of kitchen stuff, same process.

Furniture, choose what to keep and what to dispose of. If it's broken contact council to arrange bulky collection if you don't drive or book a slot to take to tip if you do drive. If you just don't like it and will replace in your new home with something else or you just don't need it any more, then advertise on Facebook marketplace and give away or sell cheaply to make sure it goes quickly. Or British Heart Foundation will collect, including working electricals and washing machine (they'll replace pipes or door rubbers etc if necessary).

Bathroom stuff, either do the list thing and donate the new and unused leftovers of products to a food bank, or box up the lot because it'll all get used eventually.

Go through bedding, get rid of stained ones or ones with broken fastenings into textile recycling. Box up the rest. Ditto raggedy towels that's past their best.

If you've too many books/CD/DVD pick out your favourite ones, leave the rest on your wall "free, help yourself" for passers by.
