Coverless Duvets / Comforters

I’ve recently discovered coverless duvets, which I’m assuming is what Americans call a comforter?

Either way, I LOVE the idea of them. No putting the duvet cover on, you can wash the whole thing, what’s not to love.

Before I buy some, can I ask it you use them would you recommend them? Pros and cons?

Plus, where do you get them from in the U.K.? I’ve only seen maybe 2 different places that sell them.

But surely that would only work for thin ones which are not warm enough for winter? A bit like a quilt? Anything warm enough for winter would be dawn, wool or thick polyester - and too hard to wash regularly?

I like them but layered over a duvet.I like thicker, heavier ones, you really to wash them in a laundrette though. You can often get them in tk maxx or I buy them from dawsons linens online ( some bargains to be had!)Trickier to gauge weight/ thickness though.

Yes, I also have that heavy quilt style that is over my duvet - for decorative purposes and for extra warmth. But would be a huge pain to wash regularly.

I have a king size 10.5 tog coverless waffle duvet from the fine bedding company. I use it as it is, ie not as a topper. I love it! It fits in my washing machine fine, wash it in the morning and put it back by bed time. I plan to replace all of my duvets with the same. My only complaint is that they are a bit boring to look at…. I’ve not found any that are patterned.

(Also I noticed this lot are on top cash back)

My 15 year old son is autistic and we absolutely love our duvet from Fine Bedding company. He doesn't need to struggle with the covers and it's more hygenic just to shove in the machine (double goes in my washing machine fine).
I'm thinking of getting one for my daughter as well.

My son's is a blue marl design, it's a bit like a sleeping bag material.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 21/01/2022 01:34

Will it fit in your washing machine?

If yes, buy two in case it takes a long time to dry.

They are great (had one in the US (only one because I had a massive dryer as well)).

My DD uses one in summer. It came from
M&S and is pink. The only problem with it is that it isn't warm enough to use in winter so we go back to duvet and cover.

I bought one for in our caravan, we use it while away then wash when we get home.

Just to say - we've got pillows from Fine Bedding Company. They are synthetic, (for allergies etc) washable & they completely go back to their proper shape every time. Totally worth the money. And they dry fairly quickly - we don't have a tumble dryer but manage even in winter just on a laundry rack.

Ours came from M&S

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 21/01/2022 07:58

I do sleep in on call shifts at work and have my own bedding to keep there - I have one for that (it came in a carry bag which is handy) from M&S. I like to wash the whole thing because I'm sometimes paranoid someone else might have used my duvet (although I don't logically think this but sometimes I wonder) and because I cba changing the cover at midnight before falling into bed for a few interupted hours - its bad enough having to fetch my bedding from the store room and put the sheet on before being able to lie down.

I like it for work but I think they're bulky to wash for home - take up more of the machine than just a duvet cover, plus you'd have to wash them in the morning to have back on the bed at night or have two each to wash one and use the other.

Mine is a bit synthetic/ polyester/ staticy which would bother me for everyday use at home.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 21/01/2022 08:03

Having read the other comments I'd add that although I said they are bulky for washing I meant if using for the whole family at home and needing to wash 4 or 5 of them!

Mine goes in the washing machine together with the rest of my work washing (a set of clothing plus the leggings and t shirt I sleep in) with plenty of space. We have a slightly larger liad capacity machine (8kg I think) but you can definitely wash them in a home machine!

Bookaholic73 · 21/01/2022 08:54

Thanks everyone.

I have a 10kg washing machine, so I think it’s fit in there to wash no problems.
I’ll definitely look into M&S and also Fine Bedding.

Do you put a sheet between you and the duvet?

Re: washing machine size - 10kg should be fine but other people should consider volume as well as weight.

Loobyloo12345 · 11/04/2025 20:22

Got all mine from the Fine Bedding Company like another person on here . So easy you just wash the whole thing and air dry it . Like an American comforter . Trying to fit a duvet cover onto a duvet and climbing inside to find the corners - well, life really is too short! My American friends are constantly bemused by our duvet covers and the hassle it involves .
