Talk to me about your corner cupboards

6 months ago, we bought a new house. It has a serviceable but not ideal kitchen which we intend to renovate. It's going to be a very big job and will involve wall knock throughs etc so it's a 2023 thing.

In the mean time, we are making small, cheap adjustments. One of the hob rings didn't work (glass top and smashed) so we've stuck in a new electric hob for £60. Added a plate rack for £50. Spice rack for £30. You get the idea? Cheap resolutions to annoying issues.

The most annoying issue is the corner cupboard. It's so deep I'm convinced it goes to Australia. It's so dark that I have to use a torch. I am of the opinion that corner cupboards should be listed on the full structural survey report.

The kitchen is remarkably low on storage for such a large house and so I can't afford to just sack this cupboard off. We have opted to use it for pan storage.

I know that gadgets exist for these things. Spinny things. Pulley things. Things attached to the cupboard door. I've seen them on Google. And I've seen them in the wild too - in the houses of people that are mad enough to fit a corner cupboard.

They seem to hover around the £150 mark which seems steep and leaves no room for trial and error.

Corner cupboard people, can you give me your recommendations? I covered my boiling potatoes with a plate last night (thanks plate rack) because the pan lid had gone to Brisbane. I can't take it anymore.

This is a support thread for people with corner cupboards so please be kind.

Easy and cheap option has been the best for me.

I have four fabric IKEA boxes, two on each shelf. Remove the first, to bring the corner one out. Shove them all back in again. Works brilliantly for things you don't use that often but want to keep. Because they are cloth, they slide in and out really easily. There's no wasted space.

One of mine hosts the jam jar collection, the other the sandwich bags/bottles for picnics.
The forward ones have all my baking supplies.

It works so well that I've started using them in other cupboards. Effectively turns a cupboard into a drawer. I've a two drawer version that has my tupperwares and lids in.

Is it a straight or an L-shaped corner?
What works well is having shelves of reduced depth, so you can see what's on them but also what's underneath to the back of the cupboard. 30-35cm is about right. I also wondered about putting a little light in like a fridge but never did!

I have this and it works really well

diy-kitchens.com/kitchen-units/corner-base/pull-out/1000mm-1000mm-wide-highline-corner-base-carousel-(chrome-wire)/wp1005809/#.YfAsnCSnwWM

I’m sure you must be able to get the carousel without the unit somewhere

I’ve got a proper corner cupboard which you can’t access easily -just one door- and just put things I hardly ever use back there like the slow cooker and pasta maker etc. The carousel things limit what you can put in and I don’t really need to see the slow cooker every time I get something else! Just shove it in!

We have this one - looks very similar to the Le Mans ones mentioned up thread.

It’s brilliant. I was rather nervous when we had it installed in 2016 but thought we’d give it a try, and it’s been brilliant. Stable as a rock. And I have it loaded up with loads of Pyrex and le creuset and giant mixing bowls. It’s not one of these delicate flower “i can only deal with a sugar bowl and a tea cup” carousels.

If this is an L shaped corner unit, I would consider trying to alter the doors. Two pp have posted photos of corner cupboard doors that open the space up fully. This can be done with two doors or one hinged door.

As most units are standardised you could try to find a slim door that would fit the size currently a blank cupboard side but short enough to close.

Cut a hole in the blank side, possibly leaving a vertical strut for integrity. Fit the small door. Not perfect fit but for a year or two this would achieve a more open cupboard.

If you are not confident ask a carpenter.

Our house came with the most amazing pull out corner cupboard rack. Before I experienced this wonder of modern engineering I'd assumed they well all rubbish because ones in previous houses had been. But this one is so terrific. When we redid the kitchen I put in a second corner cupboard and fitted another one because I love it so much. It's so smooth to operate and provides great storage.

This is the one we have. It really isn't cheap, but all my cheaper ones have been rubbish.

We have exactly the same in our corner cupboard.
We use it for the items most in use; it’ll accommodate a huge amount.
not a budget item but worth every penny in my opinion.
