Black Mould 😔

Hi everybody!

We have had black mould in the past in our bathroom. This was sorted with HG mould spray and Elbow Grease mould spray (used on separate occasions). However, it stinks the house out, even with windows open!

I've just discovered our bedroom has black mould along the skirting boards and window frames too. Our windows have blown, they need replacing but we're in no place to do so. It's freezing as we don't have a carpet which doesn't help either.

Any tips on removing/preventing the mould without stinking the house out? 🙂

Watching with interest as our bathroom has this tendency too!

picklemewalnuts · 09/01/2022 18:22

My FiL uses neat bleach, applied with a paint brush.

PlasticPlantsDontDie · 09/01/2022 18:22

Oh mine too. I keep putting off spraying cos it’s such a disgusting task

HonestlyFFS · 09/01/2022 18:24

I’d cut it out and apply new mastic. Easy enough to do yourself

YukoandHiro · 09/01/2022 18:25

Our whole house has it, tons of issues that we can't afford to fix. The HG doesn't work while the underlying cause is still there. If you get it on the walls you can use anti mould paint which helps keep it away, but they don't make a version for the window frames. Sorry. It's expensive to clear, impossible in some properties

MondeoWoman · 09/01/2022 18:30

I just mix some hot water with a couple of squirts of bleach in the sink then put in a cloth rag, wring out and use it to wipe away the mould. It doesn’t smell much. I throw away the cloth after but leave the bleach in the sink for 20 mins before draining as it leaves it nice and clean.

OddSocksSparklyDocsandDungaree · 09/01/2022 18:30

The HG spray worked really well in the bathroom and hasn't returned. Just don't want to spray in our bedroom as it stinks. Think we may have to though.

@HonestlyFFS We can't afford anything like that unfortunately 😔

Dettol mould and mildew removal (it's a green bottle) it's great at removing it but does stink so you need to open plenty of windows to air the house for a bit.

Bagelsandbrie · 09/01/2022 18:34

Windows wide open. Well quite open. Heating on. Dettol mould spray. That’s all you can do really. We have a house that’s prone to it and it drives me crazy.

OddSocksSparklyDocsandDungaree · 09/01/2022 18:36

The Dettol one did nothing unfortunately Sad It's so frustrating. We're both working full time but with nursery fees, rising gas and electricity etc, its just impossible to do anything 😔

Use this paint…

www.screwfix.com/p/zinsser-self-priming-paint-satin-white-1ltr/13040?tc=NA8&ds_kid=92700052136101338&ds_rl=1243321&ds_rl=1241687&ds_rl=1245250&ds_rl=1245250&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI27XDiael9QIVwrTtCh02OQM7EAQYAiABEgJ5lvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

We had black mould every winter/spring in every upstairs room on the sloped ceiling above the bedroom/bathroom windows.

Cleaned it all thoroughly, waited a few days for it to dry and then applied 3 coats of the above paint. This was around 4 years ago and we’ve not had a mould problem since. You can purchase various finishes, we ordered the matte version as it was going on the ceiling. It can also be mixed with another paint (colour) if you didn’t want white, mixing ratio specifications are stated on the back of the tin.

Couldn’t recommend this brand or paint enough!!

Kilrock professional mould spray is good, but it does stink, need to spray & ventilate.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 09/01/2022 18:49

Our en-suite is full of mould. It's disgusting and getting worse by the day. It's down the walls and all over the ceiling and window frames.
We've been advised to go in the loft and move the insulation around to make sure there's enough covering where all the mould seems to be. It looks like it's all been rolled back, but we can't squeeze down to sort it out.
Nothing seems to kill the mould off though. The main bathroom is unusable so we're having to use the mouldy en-suite all the time.

OP you'll have more luck cleaning the mould off the window frames than the skirtings I reckon, but hopefully there's a miracle cure!
Would be worth keeping your eyes on freecycle regularly for a carpet though, I frequently see new or almost new carpet going on there.

RB68 · 09/01/2022 18:52

we have a couple of areas which are an issue but a good wall wsh with mould stuff and doors open and get in all the nooks and crannies - do this once. Then more regular cleaning and neat vinegar seems to keep it at bay better - you could use white vinegar which is less smelly than the malt

I only have a prob in the bathroom. I have 2 teenagers who take very long showers so it gets very humid in there. Is it best to open the window wide and let the cold air in so all the water cools on the walls, or open the bathroom door & whack the central heating up ?

You want to keep the steam in the bathroom so open the windows in there.

Dodie66 · 09/01/2022 21:35

Neat bleach.my hubby puts some bleach on some cotton wool and puts it on the mould. Leaves it for a while and when he removes the cotton wool the mould has gone. It stays in place quite well
Ours is around the window frames too

MotherOfCrocodiles · 09/01/2022 21:40

Bleach definitely

Milliemoo1908 · 09/01/2022 21:44

Bleach works wonders!

caringcarer · 10/01/2022 00:59

A steam clean gets it off grout in-between the tiles. Steam, then rub over with a toothbrush. Best bit it does not stink like bleach does. It would work around plastic double glazed windows too.

Danikm151 · 10/01/2022 01:16

At my old flat I used cillit bang black mould remover.
The stuff was brilliant and affordable. Spray leave 5 mins then wipe off.
Then get some anti mould paint

OddSocksSparklyDocsandDungaree · 16/01/2022 15:38

Thought I'd update you all.

I bought some white vinegar spray (about 99p in Home Bargains) and its cleared it! Our bedroom smells like a chippy though Grin
