Why does my fridge keep freezing everything?

We have a small under the counter fridge and in the last 2 weeks it keeps freezing all the food and the back of the fridge is covered in a layer of ice. This happens whether the fridge is full or there's hardly any food in the fridge. We usually have the fridge on 3 but have tried turning it down to 1 to 'defrost' then back up again but it just freezes all over again.

Do I need to get a new fridge? Help!

I have this exact problem.

I'm so sick of throwing food away.

Can't afford annew fridge either. Plus there's no way in hell I can get the one I have out the kitchen

@Whatwouldscullydo I feel your frustration! Hopefully someone comes along with a solution because I'm at my wits end Sad

Maybe its thermostat is broken so it thinks that it's too warm in there? I'd be arranging for a service technician to visit and test it.

Blocked drainage hole, too close to wall behind so overheating?

I have the same problem here. Hoping for advise on this too.

@LIZS thanks for the suggestions. Our kitchen was installed badly… so perhaps it could be too close to the wall. But how does overheating cause the fridge to freeze the food? Genuinely asking as I’m not sure I understand how that would happen.

Ours is installed next to the oven (as I mentioned, poorly planned and installed). So if overheating is an issue, mine could well be caused by that!

Thank you

During the holidays, we tend to open the fridge a lot more than normal, which lets in warm, moist air, that causes condensation at the back of your fridge which then freezes. Every other day just wipe any water droplets at the back of the fridge.

Alternatively, depending on where your fridge is located in the house, if the temperature of the room is warm or has a radiator in it, you may need to lower the temperature on the thermostat in the fridge to keep it cool enough. On the opposite side, if your fridge is in a cold room eg a garage, or in a room outside, you might need to higher the temperature on the thermostat in the fridge to keep it from being too cold and icing up when the temperature gets colder over Winter.

When I've had this issue I've helped mitigate it by making sure the food in the 'freeze' zone is not going to be frozen quickly or won't be too damaged if it is eg meat / cheese / root veg tends to survive. Or condiments with a high oil / vinegar content.
