Cleaning my new granite worktop

flowerytaleofNewYork · 20/12/2007 14:24

I have a spangly new black granite worktop The leaflet thingy says clean it with hot water, and it's coming up a treat with that using a microfibre cloth. But surely that won't get rid of germs and stuff? I usually use Cif kitchen spray -can/should I use this on the granite and if not, what should I clean it with?

I use clear anti-bac cleaner on mine - with kitchen towel. Don't know what was advised as worktop was here before we moved in.

I was told to just use soapy water ,don't worry about germs myself.

Also buff it occasionally with lakeland worktop wonder tis £££ but last ages.

Wouldn't use cif if it was a cream cleanser..is it?Otherwise fine I think.

Ooh thanks for suggestions. Cif is a cream, yes, so I won't use that. Lakeland stuff looks good, might pop in there.

just dettox or washing up liquid

.. check back of cif pretty sure it says not to use on natural stones

and then an e-cloth

once in a while you can use a granite spray

ggirlsbells · 20/12/2007 14:35

Just don't use anything abrasive daily as it will spoil the highly polished finish.

I was told to use steel wool to scrub the limescale stains away around the sink and taps.Works a treat despite it seeming slightly harsh.

mumtwofairies · 20/12/2007 14:38

A friend of mine said you can use Viakal! Haven't used it on mine yet but tend to use soapy water and buff it up with an e-cloth thing.

We bought a daily granite spray (available from John Lewis) which we use now and again.

I personally wouldn't recommend any anti-bacterial things. For one they promoste super bugs as the bacteria learn to resist the anti-bacterials and two, remember bacteria lives EVERYWHERE so it is a myth to think you can get rid of bacteria; basic hygiene is more than sufficient, eg. warm soapy water (washing up liquid- not anti-bacterial!) will be fine.

For my granite I use a microfibre cloth and warm water. If you want to buff up, olive oil brings it to a shine brilliantly!

Thanks so much all, I'll stick to my microfibre cloth with warm soapy water

please be careful with oils .. olive oil can stain granite .. but I'm sure that's just spillage .. same with acids like lemon juice and vinegar

which black did you get?

ladylush · 20/12/2007 23:03

I prefer to use anti-bac esp if I have been preparing raw meet. I don't think you need to use it every day in which case bugs won't become resistant to it.

ladylush · 20/12/2007 23:03

Doh meat

flowerytaleofNewYork · 20/12/2007 23:54

Magrat it's, um, Nero Assoluto or something like that, quite plain shiny black, weeny bit sparkly.
