Dreams about new house being dirty and disgusting…

I’m due to move in to a new house in the new year, it’s an older home and old decoration etc

I keep having horrible dreams the carpets are infested with bugs, dreams about the walls being covered in oil splatters and filth everywhere. We will strip the entire house and everything will be new, and there was nothing dirty in the slightest when we visited multiple times before buying.

I’m desperate to go in and clean as soon as I get the keys, any tips to help me make the house feel like my own?

I think I’m just getting the ick factor it’s someone else’s house!

Thanks

Could you book some cleaners to come in on the first day as well? It would be much easier if there was a team of you attacking it!

Houses can be cleaned. That’s what accounts for 50% of my income. If you don’t want to do it hire a pro. We’re pretty good. At least you’re not dreaming about the last occupant that died in what is now your bedroom (yes that’s me) or the roof falling down. Leave a few days before leaving your current home and moving your stuff in to either clean it or have someone do it. Hire a carpet cleaner - not a karcher, theyre shit. Screwfix basic carpet shampoo with a bit zoflora added to the mixture leaves a great smell. Don’t dust anything, wipe it all down with a weak antibacterial and warm water. Clean all ‘touch points” (those are door handles, light switches, sockets etc anything people finger regularly) with a stronger antibac (I actually use antiseptic) and if it’s a built in kitchen use something like oven pride on the oven and bicarbonate in the fridge. Bash a Calgon through washing machines and dishwashers. Pay attention to the tops of high kitchen cupboards and either clean or get a new extractor fan filter. I’m not a bleach fan myself but I bleach toilets and plug holes in new home cleans then I just use disinfectant on the rest. Anything you’re worried about as either a food prep area or for really young kids that you don’t want to use harsh chemicals on I’d use miltons baby sterilising fluid either neat or concentrate depending on what it was. That’s all I can think of off the top of my head.

any tips to help me make the house feel like my own?

It will begin to feel like your own as soon as you have your own things around you. When you go in to clean, you could also play some favourite music, spray a little bit of a favourite perfume around, take some flowers or a Christmas ornament to display - anything to begin to impress your own personality on the house.

I think the dreams are quite natural and normal, though. Buying a house is a stressful business, and this is your mind's way of processing it.

Oh. And grease or oil spatters? You can get any old degreaser but I’d vouch for the yellow elbow grease stuff either in a spray bottle or I can get it at janitorial supplies in gallon jugs concentrate. Don’t know if that’s available to the general public though or just us old scrubbers. It’s by far the best one and I’ve got crime scenes and crack dens under my belt. Done some right hovels and they’ve turned out fine so I’m sure yours will too

oh @highlandpony now I'm dreaming about you coming and deep cleaning my house for me!

OP your dreams sound like how I felt when I was heavily pregnant and nesting. It did pass,. and I'm sure yours will too once the house has been cleaned. It's just your brain going into overdrive because you don't have control of the house right now.
