Mummy2CharlotteJean · 17/12/2007 11:30

Well im not actually a wife but you all know what i mean.
this is my 1st 'proper family home' and ive never run a house before. i cant seem to find the motivation to do the housework. i dont even know where to begin really.
dp keeps having a go at me cos the house is always 'a mess' its not dirty just clutered mainly.
im wanting to get the whole house dont 1 day when he is out and show him im not useless.
oh and what happens when ive done it? i mean how do i keep it that way.
have i made any sense.
TIA

You have to start slowly, take it in bite-sized chunks. Don't try and do everything at once or you will just get fed up with it and give up! So just spend say 15 minutes a day decluttering to start with - it's amazing how much you can get done if you work solidly for 15 minutes. I got on top of things by FLYing - new groups start up on MN all the time, but you can follow the babysteps on the website.

have a look at the fly threads on her under goodhousekeeping

or do what i do - don't bother!

I have just recently become a housewife. but its not that easy when you are also dealing with dc. Anyway I tend to put a wash on at night before bed. so that in the morning it is ready to go in dryer. I then aim to do one room per day. I hoover right through twice weekly. dishwasher also goes on last thing at night ready to be emtied in the morning. And to be honest if have dc you can only tidy up toys when they are in bed. hth

Kitchen - clean surfaces, cooker, sink, floor
Bathroom - wipe surfaces, clean loo etc, fold towels, clean mirror
Bedrooms - make bed, fold clothes, hoover, dust
Sitting room - straighten sofa cushions, hoover, dust
Stairs - hoover

This will take less than an hour (I live in a 2 bed house) and your house will look tidy. Put clutter from each room into a box and sort afterwards - bin/file/eBay etc.

If you want to do a thorough clean you'll need to wash curtains/cupboards/fridge/windows, scrub toilet fittings, scrub wooden floors/stairs, wipe all switches and sockets, etc. But you can make your house look good really fast by doing the first bit. Also, open the windows every day. And try not to let laundry pile up. And get your DP to do his bloody share!

The main thing to remember is you can't clean clutter!

I follow flylady - more or less. She tells you to concentrate on 1 room a week, so this week it is master bedroom. This stops you getting overwhelmed thinking whole house is a tip, better not do anything.
