Grease stains on clothes

Is there any way to get rid of old greasy food stains from clothes?

My 18 month old seems to cover herself in food so all of her trousers are getting covered in various greasy food stains.

Would bio washing detergent make any difference? I've tried using elbow grease and fairy (I do try and do this when they are fresh by don't always get them all).

My son work at McDonalds, and is often covered in greasy stains. The best thing I have found is to soak his clothes in washing soda for about 30 mins, rinse, then wash normally. So far it has worked getting rid of the grease.

Do you mean fairy as in washing up liquid? I treat grease stains with a neat blob and a bit of a rub in with a finger then wash as normal. This tends to be successful 😉

My mum was terrified of grease on clothes. It would be wipped off and treated with fairy liquid imeadiately.

I don't think it's a problem with modern detergents though. DS also works in McDonalds and Ariel Bio Gel doesn't seem to have any trouble with his uniform

Whipped off!

QueenGoblin · 01/12/2021 19:27

@Dontfuckingsaycheese I do mean fairy liquid.

@Londonnight when you say washing soda do you just mean regular detergent?

I'm going to keep trying with fairy, and hopefully these old stains will eventually come out!

@QueenGoblin, no, it isn't regular detergent, it is soda crystals. You only need a small handful in some hot water.
It's good for cleaning washing machines and dishwashers.

This is what I use www.dri-pak.co.uk/

Talcum power gets rid of most grease stains.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 01/12/2021 20:14

Ooh yes - good old talc - I had forgotten that one. Sprinkle talc on it, cover with brown paper and iron over it…

shouldistop · 02/12/2021 14:22

Fairy liquid on both sides of the stain. Rub in well and leave for a while before putting in the wash

Bienchen · 04/12/2021 16:22

Gall soap is excellent on grease any many other stains, too.

Pumperthepumper · 04/12/2021 16:24

Elbow grease spray from B&M, it’s an absolute miracle worker.

QueenGoblin · 04/12/2021 16:34

@Bienchen Would this work on old grease stains that have already survived a few washes?

@pumpertheplumper just came on to say the same. Brilliant stuff.

20FlowerPower · 04/12/2021 16:41

The Vanish gold pre-treat gel is good for grease - even old ones. The trick, as a PP has mentioned, is to run it on both sides on the stain (so inside and outside) then leave it for a few mins before washing

sqirrelfriends · 04/12/2021 16:42

Fairy liquid works well. It also gets deodorant stains off silk.

purplecorkheart · 04/12/2021 16:44

liquid hand soap works in my experience. Damped stain very very slightly. Rub in soap from both sides.

pastypirate · 04/12/2021 16:45

Elbow grease did nothing for grease stain on trackies. Will try the soda crystals though

SwanShaped · 04/12/2021 16:45

Get the Astonish stain remover bar. It works a treat and lasts ages.it’s not just for shirts like it makes it look on the packet. You wet the clothes and rub it on, it’s like a bar of soap. Then wash as normal and they’re completely gone. It even works on ones that have already been through the wash and tumble dryer.

Mamette · 04/12/2021 16:48

Does anyone else find grease stains on the DC’s clothes but only after washing? Clothes go into washing machine with no grease stains, but the stains appear after the clothes have dried?

It happens with the uniform tracksuits and any other dark coloured clothes they have. Drives me crazy.

It may well, no harm in trying. It is my go to stain remover for most stains. It even shifted soy sauce from a brand new grey wool skirt.
