Fruit flies

I get what seem to be some sort of fruit flies around my window kitchen. I blocked the small gaps but still getting those pets. Where the heck do they come from? How can I stop getting them in? So annoying

I have had them too! Have been bitten as well, but caught of lot of them by leaving out a glass of vinegar with some drops of dish soap in. They're horrible little fuckers.

They are!! Can't stand them. I spend my time wiping dead ones on window sill. Can't figure out where they get in from

If they’re fruit flies, they’ll be coming from fruit/veg no? If I leave an old banana lurking in the fruit bowl it can trigger an outbreak. Eggs are probably on the fruit when you buy it, then take a while to hatch, feast on rotting fruit and then take to the air.

A paper cone inserted into the mouth of bottle/cup with some cider vinegar in the bottom makes a good fly trap.

discombob · 24/11/2021 16:12

I get them if I leave the kitchen or bathroom window open and lights on when it's dark.

Nothing to do with fruit or anything decomposing but there'd be so many, I'd have to vacuum them all off the ceiling.

Sorry, I do t really have a solution if it's a gap rather than a window. Just want to share that the buggers just like to come in

TopCatsTopHat · 24/11/2021 16:13

House plants can be a source.

RaisinFlapjack · 24/11/2021 16:13

That doesn’t sound like fruit flies. Thrips, maybe?

I don't know if they're fruit flies I don't so but I call them that cos they look the same. I only have fresh fruits out

I don't get them where my plants are. But those bugs only gather around my kitchen window

Are you sure they are fruit flies and not drain flies?

tumtitum · 24/11/2021 16:17

I get this when I have lots of fruit or house plants in the kitchen! The vinegar and washing up liquid works! Also my current batch are lazy flyers so I've been managing to clap them into submission! 😂

PrincessPaws · 24/11/2021 16:18

We were getting them in our kitchen and bathroom - foaming drain cleaner poured down all plug holes and in all overflows got rid of them

Watching with interest as I have an invasion of teeny flies. I suspect my houseplant collection in my case.

yellowstoneranch · 24/11/2021 16:26

We had an invasion a few months ago ... eventually found a potato at the back of a cupboard hiding from sight and attracting fruit flies galore. Vinegar in a pot and removal of the offensive food source took about a week to eliminate them all 🤢

kafryne · 24/11/2021 16:31

I googled drain flies. They don't look like those. I've got lol super teenie tiny sort of fruit flies look alike. I can't see anything left that's rotten. I'll try the vinegar and soap

Vinegar in glass. Cling film over top with small holes in it. They can get in but not out. Don’t need much vinegar.
