on the "I'm only 42' thread they keep referring to this as something weird that mothers used to do

but otherwise your feet aren't tucked in at the bottom

and it feels wrong

No, you're an American in a British woman's body.

They do that.

Top sheet and then duvet.

Drive DH mental.

gibberish · 15/12/2007 22:11

Good grief No! I don't use a sheet - it just means more washing.

HabbiChristmasToBu · 15/12/2007 22:17

Ugh - one reason I hate sleeping in hotels. I spend ages kicking out all the sheetage so that my feet have room to breathe.

MrsGrinch · 15/12/2007 22:18

Oh I do it in the winter - with a flannelette sheet so it's nice and toasty.

expatinscotland · 15/12/2007 22:21

I bring a top sheet with me on all my travels and even to hospitals so I can avoid having to sleep under some manky duvet that I don't know where the hell it's been.

I even have this silk sleepsack from years ago when I used to travel in some underdeveloped places but that was more because of fleas and bedbugs.

yorkishbirdy · 15/12/2007 22:23

I am 30 and I do it - my Mum is somewhat older than me and doesn't

forkhandles · 15/12/2007 22:27

hmmmm, flannelette sheet - nice touch

Awenamanger · 15/12/2007 22:31

I use a sheet with duvet too and am only 32.

frothykindofadrink · 16/12/2007 12:01

I'm feeling much more normal now

I actually can't entertain the idea of having my grotty feet - and those of my dh - just one thin cotton duvet cover away from the duvet, which doesn't get washed every week

also ditto hot in summer thing

I breakdance in my sleep, apparently, and have woken to find the duvet upside down/sideways/on the floor.

I don't use a sheet twixt bed and duvet - perhaps that might help.....

As I never have a body temperature above about 24 frigging degrees, it might help that too.

[remembers an age before fitted sheets]

Akchewly, in my yoof I had a sheet, a blanket made from a soft looking wool that had the exact feel of a brillo pad, and some sort of covering on top of that.

Now I'm just rambling. Right, off to find a sheet and change a bed.

SantaKLAWs · 16/12/2007 12:19

Well I'll be 41 in Feb, I have a sheet under our duvet.... we have Kingsize bed so it makes wahing a bit easier, just have to wash the sheets, the kingsize duvet cover takes up all the washing machine. We tuck sheet in at the foot of the bed but the sides are not tucked in apart from half a hospital fold, iyswim. I don't feel restricted. We also have a top cover which we fold down at night, so that the cat doesn't sleep directly on the duvet during the day. In summer time we can throw off the duvet if it's too hot and put a blanket on for lighter warmth.

Ds (14) doesn't want a sheet as he just kicks it off, so fair enough.

I like 100% cotton, can't bear the poly cotton! Does anyone else remember those awful sheets that used to spark with friction if you flapped them up and down as you got into bed? [shudders] OMG, I even had night dresses like that, must have been nylon material.....?

ghosty · 16/12/2007 12:22

I am 37. I do it. My mother never did it.
What does that mean?
I think it is an antipodean thing though - never did it in the UK but adopted the practice in NZ.

squix · 16/12/2007 12:25

DH likes sheet and duvet combo and likes to be well tucked

I like just duvet

We have to be inventive

Niecie · 16/12/2007 12:25

My mum still does it because she says a sheet is easier to iron than a duvet cover and she doesn't wash the duvet cover very often.

I used to love sheets and blankets but I find a with a sheet and a duvet there isn't the weight on top of the sheet to stop it getting a wrinkled, screwed up mess during the night which I can't stand so I don't have a sheet.

I am 41 by the way and still remember my mother's being called a continental quilt. It cost a fortune and she said that they were too expensive for me and my brother to have one too. No matter - I preferred blankets and would have them now if it weren't for DH requiring a duvet.

Niecie · 16/12/2007 12:28

SantaKlaws - I think those sheets came from Brentford Nylons. Whatever happened to them?

We had brushed nylon sheets in winter for warmth and wyncette (sp) nighties too. You are right about the static though! Not a good look for your hair in the morning.

soanxious · 17/12/2007 17:10

I do it - I think soft flanelette sheets feel nicer than duvet covers, especially in the winter! And in the summer there's nothing like a crisp white sheet.

Drives DH mad - he thinks I'm nutty! I thought everyone did it....
