Savlon tube burst in my sock drawer - Eeek! Perma-smell problem.

Hi,

I wondered if I could ask for advice about getting rid of the smell of Savlon in clothes? I had a really unfortunate accident.

I keep spare first aid equipment in the top drawer of my chest of drawers in the bedroom. Unfortunately a couple of weeks ago a tube of savlon appears to have somehow gone off, and then split. It took me a while to pin down where the smell was coming from and unfortunately it's one of those smells that is quite nauseating after the first sniff.

Anyway, I binned away the contents of the first aid drawer. Then I boil washed the clothes in the drawer below, three times, but the smell would not leave them, so I binned the lot.

I then waited a week, but the room still smells strongly of savlon.

I tried taking the next drawer down, downstairs, and the smell came with it. I then took the clothes out, and the smell came with them. I have put them in the outside bin. Then I binned all the other clothes in the chest of drawers. That did help, as the drawers then did not smell when they were not in the room. (My clothes are not fancy, were not expensive and were quite old. Also fortunately I'd been quite lazy when it happened and all my good things were in the wash, so it's not such a hardship to bin the lot.)

Unfortunately the room still smells strongly of savlon and I begin to worry that it may have got into the bedcovers or the carpet or something.

I just wondered if anyone has experience of this kind of thing? I don't really want to have to bin all the soft furnishings. I can't bear the smell though, so cannot currently be in the room for any length of time. Also sniffing around to find the source of the smell is a really unpleasant job.

Thanks!

Bicarbonate of soda might absorb the smell?

StrongLegs · 13/11/2021 22:03

That's a good idea, thanks. If that would take the edge off it, it might really help me to get into the room to figure out what to do.

I love the smell of Savlon. Not helpful I know.

StrongLegs · 13/11/2021 22:12

LOL! You wouldn't pop round, would you?

Oddly, I do normally like it, but I think something has gone terribly wrong with this savlon, and it is not nice any more.

I cant imagine it leaking through 3? drawers to the carpet though? Is there anything 9n the carcass of the drawers? At the back maybe?

StrongLegs · 13/11/2021 22:34

I know what you mean, but the actual drawer that contained the tube is in the shed. All that is in the room is the smell that came out into the air and somehow got itself into the clothes.

It reminds me of "the cat in the hat comes back", when tiny pink stain got bigger and bigger the more they cleaned it, and finally managed to turn the whole world pink.

Sprinkle some TCP round the room.
That'll fix it.

Then raise a new thead...

Logically it shouldn’t still smell even if you open TCP bottle it can hang around few days but then it does go and Savlon isn’t half as strong. Have you checked all other soft finishing like duvet covers pillows clothes on back of the door? Could have got some on your sleeve and rubbed it over?

Wiped the underneath of the unit where the clothes may have touched from top draw?

Have you aired the room all day?

StrongLegs · 13/11/2021 22:44

LOL! Fair point.

2020isnotbehaving, yes that is what I was thinking too.

We have had the windows open all day, several days running, but the room still smells even with the windows open.

When I took a whole drawer of clothes out of the chest of drawers and carried it downstairs, the smell very distinctly came down the stairs with me. Then when I took the clothes out and put them in the outside bin, the drawer did not have the smell any more when I came back in.

It's as if there is some volatile perfume that is particularly good at sticking to fabric.

Not helpful again but I also love the smell of savlon

BatshitCrazyWoman · 14/11/2021 12:02

I also love the smell of Savlon! But my cure for persistent smells is to peg stuff outside on the line and leave it there for days, rain, snow or shine, until the smell has gone.

StrongLegs · 14/11/2021 12:24

BatshitCrazyWoman - I've been thinking the same. I just boil washed the bed sheets with a 2 hour soak in the middle and now they're out on the line for a few days and hoping for rain. :-)
