Shower trap filled with gunk - help !

I get a lot of hair in my shower trap (which is normal I think but probably worse in my case as I seem to be losing a lot of hair!).

I cleaned it out today - I usually use a wooden stick of some sort to dig out of all the bits of hair and gunk - but it’s still not draining as fast as it should be. I had a shower earlier and because it was draining slowly I ended up with this layer of shampoo/conditioner residue around the trap. I wonder if this is clogging up the trap? I can’t really get lower into it as it has those plastic grate things, if you know what I mean…

What do I do? Use some vinegar? Other product? (I read that drain cleaners can damage your pipes - not sure if this is true…)

There are3 products that you can bung down and leave for a while then jet with hot water - they do work. But are no good if you have a septic tank or biodigester.

I have got an unbunger which consists of a coil of wide metal tubing which you wind round into a cassette. You can pull out as much as you need to poke it right down the drain - you roger it about a bit and ... bingo!

you need a drain unblocker.
gels are easier to use than liquids.
and get a hair catcher to avoid too many hair going down the drain.

Can you fit a hair trap under the shower tray drainer? That's what I do I have long hair and found this massively helped. I also clean it every week grim but means it doesn't clog. I usually put down bicarb and white vinegar follow after an hour with a hot kettle.

Get some immac (or cheap own brand) hair remover. Squeeze over the outlet/plug hole and let it sit there for 20 minutes, and it will dissolve the hair. Just run the shower over it and all the short pieces will just flush away

I use the Buster gel, it doesn't seem to have damaged my pipes in a few years of use. My hair comes out a lot and I have to unclog it about once every couple of months.

HG drain unblocker is brilliant you can get it in Tesco . I use it overnight and next morning the blockage has gone . It melts thru hair too .

Thanks. I tried some vinegar and bicarbonate earlier so will see in the morning if that has made a difference. I will see if I can get a hair catcher.

get a plunger , i got a blob of stuck hair and gunk up with mine, i do it fairly regular (when i remember) now

I have this: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00871R9Z8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?psc=1&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&ie=UTF8 and it works wonders. I also have a hair trap over the plug hole but it doesn’t catch everything.

Does your plastic grate come out? Mine does but I didn't know until month after moving in. Makes such a difference once that's pulled out and cleaned.

OneDayInMyLife · 14/11/2021 21:32

You might be able to pull it out to clean it.

Anordinarymum · 14/11/2021 21:34

Use Buster. It works

AnabelBaby · 14/11/2021 21:58

Use buster but make sure it is the bathroom one.

HippyDays · 15/11/2021 21:51

Yes for buster bathroom stuff. Literally dissolves hair. I’ve used it for years and no drain damage.
