I have not felt this excited since I discovered sanitary towels can prevent new boot blisters.

You had better sit down.

Tidy people have less stuff. That's how they stay tidy.

No one bothered to tell me this life changing information. Bastards.

We are downsizing to a flat from a four bed house with a garage. I reckon I have donated/taken to the tip, at least half of the contents of our house.

We didn't need all that shit. I don't think I liked most of it.

Turns out, two mixing bowls is fine, 3 pans, 10 mugs, one duvet cover/pillowcase for each bed, no spare bedding for guests since they can bring their own, 6 bath towels, one coat each, three pairs of shoes each...I could go on.

Since decanting half of my house, it is lovely and tidy. I move a few things from room to room each day and clear the kitchen at the end of day. All manageable. I even have time for a nap on the sofa fgs.

Now my cupboards are not filled to the brim, I can PUT THINGS IN THEM.

The easiest and most satisfying clear out, was the knick knack cull. Photo frame we got for our wedding? Gone. Glass vase from my Uncle Harry? Gone. Mini collection of ornamental owls? Get in there!

It is easier to clean a house with less stuff in it. Surfaces get a quick wipe, floors are mopped without have to slalom round tables, chairs and plant stands.

If you have a friend who feels overwhelmed by keeping house, please pass this on.

You're welcome

I don't understand the one coat thing? Do you go hiking in the same coat you would wear to a wedding?

3luckystars · 26/10/2021 14:30

That’s a great idea bout the pens!! I have a whole massive jar full of them but won’t use them, I only use one of them!
I’m getting rid of the rest today! Woooooo

SwedishEdith · 26/10/2021 14:33

@secretbookcase

Dc moving out =less stuff..

I thought this would happen to us. It so hasn't. DC bought loads of new stuff for uni and then brought half of it home because they don't use it. So now we have extra cookware, bedding, lighting, but can't throw it away as they will want it when they eventually move out of uni flat shares into their own homes.

Oh, this is what's happened here. Moved away but she has now moved back and has smallest bedroom! Her stuff is now in various spaces around the house because she'll need it again one day. I have just emptied the loft and and am being ruthless about what goes back up there. I'm thinking each person can have a plastic box with a lid of stuff they want that has no purpose. The sentimental stuff it's a bit hard to throw away yet.
LoislovesStewie · 26/10/2021 14:33

When we last moved house we had 100 coffee mugs! I had made him give away loads, but we still had 100! About 2 months ago I gave away 2 crates. Guess what ? He's bought more! I can't win.Confused

elp30 · 26/10/2021 15:09

I would never consider myself a tidy person but I do have very little amounts of things. I suppose moving often does that to you. That's why my house is very easy to clean and it's done, top to bottom, within an hour. That's impressive to me as I live in Texas so my house is quite large.

My real problem is digital.
I have thousands of emails, too many apps, too many files on my computer, etc... I just make folders to put them all in and I can't seem to get rid of them. I'd love to have only the most important files on my computer, the most important apps and no unread emails. 😔

Bottleofstout · 26/10/2021 15:12

@Bottleofstout you can reset it to factory settings. Most phones / tablets / computers will have that option. Asked a younger/ trusted member of your family or friend circle ( children, nephews / nieces etc. )

Good luck.

Thank you so much @Usecoooomonsnse I really appreciate your advice! I know about factory settings but I didn't realise that that is what you use to what erase all the personal info! Really good to know - thank you!

@Monsterpumpkins

I feel quite sad reading about all these minimalist homes... I clean for a couple well into their 80's. Every square inch of their little bungalow is covered in nik naks and souvenirs.. Their whole lives are literally all over the place! They have been everywhere and they are still so happy and content.. Even with each other after 60 +years!!
Oh no, I cant abide nik nak tat. Straight in the bin.

I would feel for the children who one day have to clear this, having done so myself. Everything you throw away a memory, a lot of guilt involved but how could you keep the stuff? I know I could easily go that way and trying to reign it in!

Don’t go too far the other way either though. My parents have done this in the last couple of years. Radically clearing out everything “so no one has to deal with it when we are gone” but it is so sad. There is nothing left of them in the house. It feels like they are just waiting to die. A few memories of them, by virtue of things they have had over the years, would be nice.

Mayhemmumma · 26/10/2021 16:20

Totally. I bought lovely new cupboards and have hardly anything to put in them.

Kids rooms however are bursting, I am packing to move and their rooms are taking days - moving Lego without breaking it, is not for the faint hearted.

This thread is glorious!!

I'm another who loves decluttering but is married to a bloody hoarder.

For those over run with books, I was the same. I'm a voracious reader and they were piling up.

We had a carpenter make a Little Free Library for us and it's outside the house now. I put all of our books in and they fly out with neighbours and the community reading and bringing books.

I get so much joy from seeing the books go on to bring joy to others instead of stagnating the energy in my house and taking up space.

Just a thought for those with lots of books. You can see libraries here: https://instagram.com/littlefreelibrary

I love this

Books are such a sticking point. Why? Is it the aesthetic appeal they have? The promises they hold? Or is it the equivalent of the Blue Peter badge of the learned - look at me, I have all the books therefore I am worthy citizen! (No judgement of course, as this is a conversation I have had to have with myself)

I’ve come to see books as a transitory object (as all objects are in reality) once you’ve read them what purpose do they hold? They come in, (often second hand, borrowed or digitally) they bring joy, they move on to do the same service for someone else.

Books were a big hurdle for me for a while.

mumda · 26/10/2021 17:33

There's a show being advertised where they take everything from your house and lay it out in a warehouse.
It looks fabulous. However I think they demand you throw stuff away and don't let you keep the warehouse.

Bebethany · 26/10/2021 17:34

MrsBobDylan Loved reading your post, made me smile. Thank you and yes useful information 😂

PierrethePenis · 26/10/2021 17:35

@MrsBobDylan could you come and explain this to my DH please? I couldn’t cycle to work today he has so much in the garage, I couldn’t get my bike out from the 3 blocking it as there was nowhere to move them.

MrsMarni · 26/10/2021 17:35

but where is fun in all that?

Bebethany · 26/10/2021 17:36

MargotEmin With a bit of luck they won’t want to stay, I loved reading OP’s write up.

Bebethany · 26/10/2021 17:37

😂😂😂

MrsPetty · 26/10/2021 17:39

Best tidying tip I ever got was not to leave a room without something. It’s definitely helped me.

Thank you very much again @Usecoooomonsnse! This is so useful to know! We are about to clear out our home after over twenty years of family life and we have quite a few old computers, tablets and phones hanging around waiting to be de-personalised and recycled, so this is incredibly useful info. Thank you so much!

endofagain · 26/10/2021 17:51

What do you do if you have a resident hoarder? Other than divorce?

Bottleofstout · 26/10/2021 17:52

Sorry my previous thank you message was meant for
@Usecoooomonsnse - apologies - had a bit of an emboldening fail there!

Its a version of a USA show that used to be on- clean sweep And another where they take it to a warehouse and you live without it for a month and you get 10% back
Brittanyspringer · 26/10/2021 17:54

My sibling says to just take pictures of things then throw them out. Pictures takes up less space.

Alcemeg · 26/10/2021 17:56

This is all brilliant stuff. But I fear I can never be tidy unless I eliminate all horizontal surfaces.
