Psoriasis house cleaning tips??

Just wondering if anyone has any tips on managing the flake situation? My husband has psoriasis and I feel like our flat and car just need constantly hoovered. On the bed, the couch, the floor, me, the baby-there are skin flakes everywhere.

I don’t have a lot of experience with psoriasis specifically, but to reduce dust:

  • minimise soft furnishings (cushions etc) & have hard floors
  • get a robo vac to make daily vacuuming easy
  • bundle/fold in sheets to avoid flakes everywhere
  • dry off IN the bath/shower not bedrooms
  • damp dust with ecloths to remove dust
  • and hoover sofas/blinds/skirting boards to remove the dust too

Is he getting some treatment for this? Hope it’s not painful

Willowrose63 · 25/10/2021 18:59

Hi @DespairingHomeowner thanks for your reply I really appreciate it! Fortunately he doesn't often get pain from the psoriasis. He has various things that help(creams mainly that massively reduce) but has to do them very religiously so understandably doesn't keep it up from time to time.

Will definitely use your tips! Hadn't thought of the drying off in the shower.

If he needs to use creams constantly he should be asking for a referral to try something "more" to get it under control.

DH found changing his diet really improved things, shame it took 10 years to find out after ignoring my advice

Willowrose63 · 25/10/2021 20:40

Grin he's only been ignoring my advice for 7 years so we're getting there! He had a course of light therapy a few years ago which really helped but then returned same as before. His diet can be a bit atrocious. Do you mind me asking what changes your DH made?

He quit his addiction to Diet Coke 🤬

Also ate less "crap"

He could (unlikely I know) do some proper reading on improving your immune system through diet, but you'd probably be wasting your breath too!

Quitting caffeine and artificial sweeteners- HUGE differences, probably toxic in the levels he consumed.

AuditAngel · 25/10/2021 21:19

I’d be interested in dietary changes. I have occasional flares, definitely stress related, but my work is very stressful. I’m not really at the flakes stage, but at the itchy red patches stage, they then normally calm down.

My scalp is bad at the moment. If I’d found the T-gel last week I would have used it!

milski · 25/10/2021 21:25

Mine gets flaky when it's dry so I try and use aveeno moisturiser avidly to prevent it getting to flaky stage. I've done steroid creams, light therapy, considered immunosuppressants. Whenever it clears up a bit, it comes back with a vengeance when I stop the treatment so I just moisturise now and that's it.
The flakes are a nightmare though! So embarrassing.

RandomMess · 25/10/2021 21:36

DH has PA so the change of diet means his pain and skin have been the best in years and he's come off methotrexate.

Willowrose63 · 25/10/2021 22:21

@RandomMess that's great his pain and skin have improved. Its amazing what a difference diet can make! Tbh from your description it sounds like his diet is pretty similar- he does eat healthy foods but in addition to lots of caffeine, diet coke and tons of sweat treats.
@milski so difficult! I think that's a bit of the reason that hubby gets disheartened with trying things that it does come back the same.

I divorced my ex and that made a huge difference to me not having to hoover piles of skin he deliberately picked off and left on his side of the bedroom never to be cleaned by him.

Assuming your DH is a more reasonable man though...

A robot vacuum of some sort to maybe do a daily clean?

KoreyBay18 · 25/10/2021 22:33

Urgh realised how disrespectful that post sounded. Wasn't my intention at all - I really do sympathise that psoriasis can be extremely painful and perhaps embarrassing so I hope no offense was caused. His grimness came from his refusal to clean up, not the shedding itself.

mayblossominapril · 25/10/2021 22:39

Cut the stress down as much as possible or get him to learn how to manage it.
Improved diet and get out in the sunshine, the sunshine seems to work the best
For the cleaning up, a hand held vacuum for spot cleaning, a robot for bed room daily cleaning and then a normal one for downstairs.

Willowrose63 · 25/10/2021 22:50

@KoreyBay18 I did chuckle at the start of your post because yes that would quickly solve the issue Wink fortunately he is quite reasonable!
@mayblossominapril good tip on the hand held vacuum!

I have psoriasis on my fingers, which are painful! For me, stress and illness causes it, not diet (although Diet Coke and too much caffeine isn’t good for anyone). My skin doesn’t flake though. What treatments has your DH tried?

Willowrose63 · 25/10/2021 23:05

@MangoIce sorry to hear that must be extremely difficult having it on your fingers!!!
His appeared 30 years ago after he had a major operation. It visibly gets angrier looking if he is stressed, doesn't smoke, doesn't drink much.

  • He was prescribed Betnovate for 18 years (don't think he should have been on steroid cream for that long, not sure if that's usual)
-Tgel keeps scalp psoriasis under control(but only scalp nowhere else)
  • he used to have it quite badly on his fingernails which cleared from taking omega 3 supplements.
  • Dovinex and a moisturiser like aveeno/ E45/ 50:50 for rest of skin
  • had a course of light therapy around 4 years ago but it came back very quickly.

He is really quite a chilled out person so rarely does get stressed

@Willowrose63 I have it on some of my nails too. Awful condition!!
