Dehumidifier for utility room

Rieslingandcrisps · 20/10/2021 10:53

We have a fairly small utility room which has a washing machine, tumble dryer and ceiling mounted clothes airer in. Due to enormous amounts of washing I keep an oil filled radiator on in there to speed up drying. I’m considering getting a dehumidifier to speed up drying further and to prevent condensation and peeling paint. Has anyone used one for drying clothes? What size do you recommend? Some only collect 500ml before they need emptying but how long would that take? I don’t want to be emptying it more than once a day but I also don’t want a huge beast of a thing cluttering up the room. Any tips and advice would be great.

This thread is a bit old now, but if you've landed here looking for recommendations, we've recently updated our best dehumidifiers round-up, full of products tried, tested and recommended by Mumsnet users.
We hope you will find this useful.

I have same set up as you., and have a Pro Breeze mini dehumidifier (cost about £50). This isn't up to the job

I've been using the fan I keep around for heatwaves in the room with a window cracked open to let humidity out & that is doing the job for me much more effectively

I'd try that (if you have a fan around) & then get a better dehumidifier if you need one. Can you ask friends/family if you can borrow one on a short term basis (I originally bought mine for a leak)

That’s good to know that the £50 ones aren’t up to the job. There seems to be a big price range and I don’t want an underpowered one. Thanks.

They are definitely not, even for small/light loads. Previous owners of this house had large units that were dehumidifier/heater/aircon in 1 … might be worth a look?

I think the little ones are pretty useless. I have an ebac which is great. Meaco is another brand.

Aerielview · 20/10/2021 15:19

I got one in Aldi a few years ago, and it's brilliant for drying clothes. Not sure what the capacity is, but it's not one of the very small ones (which I tried before and was useless)

I have this.. Meaco 12 Litre Platinum Low Energy Dehumidifier and Air Purifier MEACO12LE.. from Appliance Direct.. online...
Mindblowing amount of water collected in first couple of weeks from house which has no damp problems...
Can drain direct into a sink if required.
Thoroughly recommend.. house is warmer too.

I have a Mitsubishi dehumidifier which we've used for 15 years now and it is excellent. 3L container and it has laundry setting and auto humidity control. Pricey, but its been worth every penny

I’ve got small one size of large jar coffee it fills up in about a week 500ml. I’ve got one as part of large air con unit that’s almost size of washing machine and takes in less water than this little one.

We got 1 years ago from either Aldi or Lidl and it's amazing! It was around £100. Holds loads of water it's shocking how much comes out of washing!

Happyoldbat · 21/10/2021 05:48

I recommend the ebac 15 litre one as well. It has a clothes drying mode, which is good for getting washing bone dry. We run one in our spare room instead of heating it now and all the mustiness has gone.

madisonbridges · 21/10/2021 05:54

Definitely go for a bigger one. I've been running one at my mums for damp in her back bedroom. They hold so much water. 500ml will fill from wet washing in no time.

Yes me too. It must have been around this time of year, possibly in a month or so.

These reviews from aldi would suggest that it has just been on offer very recently so although out of stock online might still be in store. It is saying a 6l capacity but can extract 20l (presumably with emptying) over 24hrs.

Carrierpigeon · 21/10/2021 06:17

I also have the Aldi one. The dehumidifier in a small room will dry a load of washing in about three hours. Wouldn't be without it. I also run it after showers for about 20 minutes, as our bathroom is cold. It prevents mould.

OddBoots · 21/10/2021 06:19

We have a big one which really helps but what we also have which helps is a 2800rpm spin drier that we put the clothes through before we hang them, you need the surface space an it's another cost though.

Only available online, not in store, and out of stock now.
