Keeping the house clean for baby with a dog

Can anybody hit me with their best tips for keeping things hygienic with a dog?
I’m quite stressed with husband’s dog. It sheds a lot, jumps up on furniture, licks things after licking its bottom, poos outside and the kids tread in it and walk it through the house. I feel like I’m going around in circles cleaning as we’ve got a baby that’s crawling and putting everything in its mouth. I realise to dog lovers I probably sound mad but I could do without a bashing

Check outside and see if it needs to be pooped scooped before letting the kids out? Tell the kids to take the shoes off as soon as the get in the doorway, hair isn’t much of an issue but the dog shouldn’t be licking other things. What kind of stuff does it lick?

Can a cheap picket style fence be put up to halve the garden so the dog can only go on one bit so the kids aren’t sharing the pooped on garden bit with the dog? This sort of thing.

Robot Hoover/mop will really help keep on top of the hair, shoes off at the door and perhaps pick up poo each day.

GoodnightGrandma · 16/10/2021 16:29

I generally know when my dog will poo, so he needs to take it out for a walk so it’s not pooing in the garden.

Itsbeen84yearss · 16/10/2021 16:34

I’ve done the thing with the picket fence but DH generally just let’s the dog out and the garden is huge so inevitably one gets missed ( plus it seems to poo multiple times a day).
It licks the kitchen cupboards even though they’ve got anti bac on them. I think it’s constantly looking for food really even though it’s well fed

This dog seems to poo five or six times a day. It’s on medication so don’t know if that’s why. How often do dogs normally poo?

Mine poos twice a day, on both of its walks.

Lostatsea30 · 16/10/2021 16:38

I have a dog and mine doesn’t poo in the garden. It gets a walk early morning and at night, plus it’s taken out midday for a wander up the street at lunchtime, just in case it needs a wee or poo. If I let it on the garden in between, it doesn’t poo because it’s had 3 (or sometimes more opportunities to do it outside of the home). Why is your DH always letting it onto the garden to do it’s business?

Is it a Labrador by any chance ? They are known for being food monsters !

Dog only poos in his own territory if he has no other option - part of owning a dog is walking and picking up after it - your husband needs to know this - you sound like you have enough to do!

GoodnightGrandma · 16/10/2021 16:45

You say it’s DH’s dog so did he have it before you had kids ?
How much walking, brushing, feeding etc does he do ?

I think he just likes it to roam free. It’s quite old so think he’s just trying to let it have a nice time type thing but I have never been able to let the baby crawl on the grass when the weathers been nice because I know there’s been poo all over the place. The other week my son kicked his football into a pile and it was all over the windows Confused

I think the dog is used to pooping on its own territory. When we met he was out all day and home late with working and the dog was alone and had like a run outside linked to the house. It always pooped there. There was a lot but it was cordoned off. Now it’s old Dh seems to be just wanting it to have the whole garden.

Dog poo left in the garden with kids around is minging, your husband should be picking up after the dog every time, the dog can't pick up after itself. If he won't, then you all need a shoes off at the door rule at least.

Clean the floors regularly, don't let the dog near the baby's toys, and don't let the baby lick the cupboards Grin

Yes he had it before the children. He does feed it but he doesn’t do much grooming. As for walking, not a lot. I have tried taking it with me to the shops with the pram but it howls and goes crazy if you tie it up outside shops plus if I have our other children it’s impossible

We do have shoes off rule but they are young kids and do forget. I just feel like I’m constantly policing everyone

Yeah I know, it's tough, especially when they're in and out like the bloody Hokey Cokey. That's why the poo should be getting picked up every time really

Thissucksmonkeynuts · 16/10/2021 17:59

When your husband is home, he needs to poop swoop regularly as a minimum. Unfortunately you need to do it the rest of the time. I have a similar situation, he has to do this and when he is home in time and well enough he has to hoover the down stairs. In theory this should be daily, but it isn't. He said he'll divorce me I I say no to another dog when this one dies, bring it on.

Itsbeen84yearss · 16/10/2021 20:33

@Thissucksmonkeynuts I’ve said the same thing. No more pets will be coming over this threshold.

@Itsbeen84yearss 14 month old dog and an 8.5 month old baby here (People said we were mad for having a puppy and a baby and they were correct Grin).

Laminate floors are cleaned with warm water, disinfectant and a cloth. I found with a cloth, it cleans much better than a mop! Rugs are scrubbed with Dr Beckman carpet cleaner. Neither happen daily, just when I remember can be bothered

We've also sectioned the living room in two so they have their own space.

I used to be horrendous for worrying about germs etc but after the dog lickef our daughter's face clean one day and she lived to tell the tale, ive chilled out a lot on the cleanliness front. Smile
