How much do you spend a week on shopping?

I know this is like asking, 'how long is a piece of string?' But just wondering home much do you spend a week on shopping. There is six of us. I have four kids, three who are teens and one six year old, my DH and I.

I am spending well over a 100 pounds a week up to 150. I do a weekly shop at Asda, and have been good to not go out again mid-week to buy extras. Usually my DH does the shopping, but his work shifts mean I do the shopping now. It's giving me anxiety to buy the right things and not spend so much.
Thanks
NB: Not including fresh meat

In Roi i spend 200 euro a+ butchers 60. For same no frills.

WilsonMilson · 13/10/2021 23:23

About £140 a week. But that’s for 3 of us, 2 adults and a teen. It’s for all meals as I make packed lunches.

You have double the people, and teens eat LOADS, so I think you’re doing really well!

TurnUpTurnip · 13/10/2021 23:49

£130-£150 me and 4 kids

zeddybrek · 13/10/2021 23:57

About £150, that's for 2 adults and 2 primary school aged children.

Food prices have definitely gone up and you are doing really well with your budget. I need to work on mine as everything seems to be costing more and more.

Weedsorwishes · 14/10/2021 00:01

6 of us here and probably around 230 a week. We use ocado and top up at m and s or waitrose. Milk bread juice and eggs from milkman. Fruit and veg from farm shop. Meat from butchers

notacooldad · 14/10/2021 00:02

I spent £55 in Lidl about 3 and a half weeks ago.
Since then I've bought two loaves of bread, an aubergine and milk and elderflower cordial.

We had a take away on Saturday which son bought round for us.

We are three adults and another adult son who is a bit of a fridge raider when he calls around.

My weekly shops are too variable to give an average, but I have noticed that prices of everything are going up …

bohomoon · 14/10/2021 08:29

Ah thanks for this. I'm out shopping today and feel less anxious now.

About £160 for 2 adults and 3 teens.

MrsBungle · 14/10/2021 08:33

I’m around £150 a week too. 2 adults and 2 kids (12 and 9).

IAmSantaOhYesIAm · 14/10/2021 09:14

I spend between £65-£80 each week at my main shop plus a top up of £20-£30 at weekends.
That include packed lunches for 2, 1-2 bottles of wine and cat food.
2 hungry teens here and they too seem to love eating…..

notacooldad · 14/10/2021 09:23

Do you meal plan Op.
My shopping bill is so low this time because I have a cupboard full of ingredients that I have never used up so I am getting rid of those. I have packets of pearl barley, kidney beans, cous cous, buck wheat, rice etc as well as a freezer full of different frozen veg

I have been doing tray bakes, risottos, veggie lasagnes, curries, stir fries with freezer food and basic store cupboard ingredients for the last few weeks.
Planning around what you may already have in can save a lot of money.

Iseeyoulookingatme · 14/10/2021 09:45

I spend about £30 a week occasionally I top up bread and milk but it's only me and ds here. When ex was here I would spend about £50a week. I also don't really drink any alcohol anymore so brings my cost down a bit.

TheOpportuneMoment · 14/10/2021 09:48

Usually between £85-100. Two adults, a pre-schooler and two cats.

Roadtrip2018 · 14/10/2021 09:55

Between £70 - £100 per week 2 adults. No top up shops or extras bought between shops. I'd say you're doing well. I try to meal plan tokeep the costs down. But noticed my normal shop without toiletries & cleaning products costs approx £15-£20 more than it did at the start of the year.

SandysMam · 14/10/2021 10:38

@notacooldad how on earth do you make £55 last three weeks for 3 adults? What are you eating? Any cleaning products etc? I am totally intrigued!

Henrywilldoit · 14/10/2021 10:44

Anything between £80-£120 per week for 2 adults and 2 children. We also tend to bulk buy things like washing powder and toilet roll from Costco once a quarter.

theneverendinglaundry · 14/10/2021 10:47

I tend to do a big shop on payday of around £300 (with loo roll, cleaning supplies, other sundries) and then weekly shops are around £100. So £600 a month, which averages at £150 per week. God it sounds like too much when I actually say it out loud. I would love to get it down to £100 per week.

There are 5 of us, 2 adults and 3 kids. DH and I are vegan but the kids aren't.

I would love to know how people do one shop per week and avoid top up shops. I think that is my downfall.

Helpimfalling · 14/10/2021 10:47

@bohomoon

Ah thanks for this. I'm out shopping today and feel less anxious now.
Almost exactly same ages as my children exactly same amount of people and kids

I'd say that's the rite amount.

notacooldad · 14/10/2021 12:46

I've set myself a challenge.
I've posted before but I'm not skint but I've set myself a target of money I want to reach. I think originally it was for March or April but I will have got there by Decembers wage so I'm going out of my way to be frugal and not buy anything at all that I don't need.

I did say we have bought milk and cheese and bread.
Anyway i already have a good stock of basics such spices, dried beans and grains and pastas as well a frozen veg. I've gone through everything and looked what recipes that everyone will eat. I've said before but I've done tangine, nut roasts, pilafs, different dahl's, risottos ( I used pearl barley once I ran out of risotto.)
Stir fries are simple and it's easy to create different sauces.
It's dead easy to make dufferent curry pastes with the spices I've already got in.
I bought a lot of supermarket herbs such as basil, parsley coriander and mint in pots in July and I've watered them and they keep growing so they add flavour and I'm not buying packets of them like I used to.
We have never bought cereal or snacks I buy oats so it's either porridge or over night coats for breakfast. All meals are made from scratch.
I've been making my own flatbread and naans. Its only flour and yogurt. Much cheaper than buying them.
This weekend we will do a shop as I need moisturizer and dishwasher and laundry tabs, harpic and loo roll.
However I enjoy meal planning and seeing what I can make.
Dh keeps saying we must be at the end off stuff now! However I've still got tins of Jack fruit to use up!

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 14/10/2021 13:01

probably £150-70pw for 2 adults, 2 teens, 2 cats. All taking packed lunches every day.

I have a Saturday delivery at £110-140. I then top up milk, fresh bread, fruit and veg every couple of days spending £5-10 or so. I prefer to buy fresh stuff as and when to reduce waste. We eat well and I cook prefer to cook most things from scratch, which IMO can be more expensive. I could shave maybe 25% off the bill being more selective over what we we, but it's affordable right now.

TiddleTaddleTat · 14/10/2021 13:02

3 of us and I've got it down to about £75. Most of it is bought at the start of the month in one big shop at lidl then a weekly shop there and very occasional top up shops.

SandysMam · 14/10/2021 13:04

That is pretty inspiring! Hope you reach your target!

RadioSixMusicLover · 14/10/2021 13:09

Roughly £150 for two of us.

Aposterhasnoname · 14/10/2021 13:19

80-120 for two people. You’re doing really well
to feed six on that budget.
