Alternatives to antibac aerosol sprays?

We have a hallway runner that's textured, and I'd always cleaned it using an aerosol antibac spray (either dettol or cheaper dupe) as I'm not sure what else to use - I do have a carpet cleaner but as it's textured and jute-type material it doesn't really work on it. I now have a newborn, and whilst he doesn't regularly frequent the hallway, we do take him in and out of there a lot and it's where things like his pram live as no space elsewhere. Another new mum was horrified that I've still been using this spray around baby - so are there alternatives for cleaning something like this or should I carry on using it and just make sure he isn't in the same room at the time etc? Is it that dangerous for babies (or us!)? It's literally about 6 sprays of the stuff and I only use it on this rug, so it's not like my house is dripping in it.

Why do you need to anti bag your rug? I would agree that lots of household sprays are not good for little lungs. Especially if not necessary. Same goes for those scented plug ins.

I never used any antibac sprays in general cleaning of floors tbh. I have a 3 year old, we use antibac spray on the kitchen surfaces, and when cleaning up a particular mess ie, cat vomit, or a dead mouse etc.

But everything is chemicals, using 6 sprays of antibac isnt the end of the world, and its not like you are sprayng it onto your baby.

Although come to think of it, I antibac'd all of DS toys becase we bought /were given a lot of things second hand. I'm not sure what worse, someone elses germs, dust and dirt or antibac? They were aired before he played with them!

I dont necessarily want antibac - just a way of cleaning the rug! With hard floors I can easily mop/ wipe... with the rug I'm a bit clueless about alternatives to be honest!

To be honest, you can’t really clean rugs properly in the same way as you can clean a wood or tiled floor. And if you are spraying stuff in it, that’s not cleaning it anyway.

I think the best thing to do is:

  • not have rugs where they are likely to get dirty or muddy
  • vacuum regularly
  • obviously do spot cleaning of any spills

This is why we have a no shoes in the house rule.

You're probably right 😔 Unfortunately the hallway is too long and narrow for people to take their shoes off before the end of the rug... but we have a wooden floor in there so it looks a bit uninviting without anything! I may need to switch it for one of those ruggable washable ones I guess!

You can use 1 part White vinegar to 6 parts water to make a homemade nontoxic antibacterial and antifungal spray cleaner. I used vinegar a lot when my DCs were crawling age.. used vinegar and washing up soap to mop the floors, vinegar and water to wipe down counters and wipe off plastic toys.

The vinegar has a bit of a tangy smell but if you use cheap white vinegar it dissipates realty quickly. Don’t use malt, apple or wine vinegar. Just plain white vinegar.
