Holes and tears in new clothes

About 2 months ago DH bought a bunch of plain white Ts and some shorts. T-shirts are M&S, shorts are Gant.

After a few washes, all the items started showing signs of damage. The shorts have some tiny tears in the fabric, but as of now the Ts are literally wrecked to the point of being unwearable - they look like they’ve been both moth eaten and slashed (little clusters of holes and long tears front & back).

I wash light colours on 40 and use non-bio powder. None of my clothes or the kids’ show any similar signs of damage. Is this just down to really cheap crappy fabric? Has anyone else had the same problem with these brands?

I got some PJ tops from M&S - both have holes along the edge, after the first couple of washes. They were marketed as extra soft. Not very good. It hasn’t happened with our other clothes.

No advice - I just presumed that they had been made cheaply. They weren’t priced cheaply though Hmm

It’s bad isn’t it? Especially from a brand that was once known for its quality. DH has T-shirts from M&S from years ago which are still fine, but that’s probably not a sustainable business model for them these days.

The Gant shorts weren’t cheap, but M&S seem to be knocking out T-shirts at a lower and lower price point and this is the result. Are they expecting people to wear them a couple of times then bin and replace?! It’s truly shocking given the impact of textiles production on the planet.

I had this with some new M&S vests. All worn less than a few months and developed tears. They've changed the material to something very thin, but the price has stayed the same.

Take them back & complain: you are likely to get a refund from M&S at least

Also: OP you might have moths, they do eat cotton especially the thin stuff

I did wonder but I really don’t think it can be moths - all our clothes are on open hanging racks and nothing else is affected, just these 3 T-shirts.

Yes, I’ll def take them back I think. And may even be moved to write to somebody somewhere! I’m really quite passed off about it.

They might have been infested in the shop (this is v common, according to Rentokil). I currently have a problem which seems to have coincided with getting a new sofa so I’m wondering if that was the origin

I would suggest you get a smoke bomb for that room as a precaution- they are about £5 from Amazon
