Preparing house to sell

I have 3 kids and an unhelpful hubby. I want to sell our house and move to the nearby town. We currently live in a tiny village. We’ve lived here for 13 yrs and I’m fed up. We have to drive everywhere, and now our eldest child (12) wants to meet up with friends more, it’s even more driving. His friends all just walk to each other’s houses and I want him to have this independence. My hubby not unwilling to move, just it seems unwilling to help prepare our current house to sell. I have been working on it for several months. I just seem to get one room ready and someone has damaged something and or made a huge mess. I feel like I’m going around in circles. My question is how did you all finally get your house ready to sell?

I think you need to have a ruthless declutter; less stuff = less mess. Then go room to room.

Agree with ruthless declutter. You need all surfaces clear as possible with only a few things out to decorate. And if you have too much furniture, get rid of some of that too. If everything is cluttered and stuffed in, it looks like your house isn’t big enough.

Of course the person who wanted to buy my beautiful decluttered house wanted to look in the garage 😫 😳

I totally get where you are coming from OP, we downsized 6 mths ago and moved from semi rural to a small city, best move we have made, much more convenient. We tidied garden, added some nice potted plants for kerb appeal, de cluttered and then de cluttered some more, cleaned, painted rooms to refresh, refreshed grouting, sealant etc. It’s hard work but so worth it. Good luck with your move.

A house doesn't need to be immaculate and perfect to sell.

Just go get an agent and list it

Tell your husband he needs to take the children out from 9am to 6pm - book a junk removal van to come up at 2pm. Spend the day gathering rubbish outside, get them to take it away. Do a bit of hoovering and cleaning.

Get a takeaway.

If your life will be improved by selling, just get the house on the market and forget about making it perfect

We made a list of DIY jobs we had been too lazy to do with toddler and full time jobs, and got a handyman in to fix everything.

Then we decluttered, especially in the kitchen. Then I had a few weekends where I cleaned like crazy, especially the bathrooms. Kept a few of those magic sponges to hand ap that any paintwork scuffs could be dealt with quickly.

Then listed if quickly before it could get dirty again!
