which vinegar to get rid of armpit smell on clothes?

I have a couple of tops I haven't worn for ages, and unfortunately they both smell at the armpits.

I've tried biological washing powder, but this didn't work.

Which kind of vinegar should I use, and how? I've got white wine vinegar, apple cider vinegar and malt vinegar in the cupboard.

None of those. You need plain, white vinegar. It's actually colourless but called white vinegar.

Is that the same as distilled malt vinegar? When I'm looking at the sainsbury's and Tesco website, I can't see anything called white vinegar.

I think it’s this vinegar

Aldi do white vinegar, usually alongside all the pickles. It's cheap as chips ( but malt is better sprinkled on them 🤐)

Beigeisthenewblack · 15/09/2021 23:12

What do you do with the vinegar? Is it applied just before washing? A pre-soak? Added to the wash?

sofakingcool · 15/09/2021 23:12

I know it's not a vinegar, but I swear by Halo sportswear wash for my DS's rugby kit and sweaty hoodies

dementedpixie · 15/09/2021 23:13

Dr beckmann has a spray for armpit smells

DramaAlpaca · 15/09/2021 23:15

Yes, distilled malt vinegar, AKA white vinegar. The one in OneMillionSteps' link is the right stuff.

Bicarb is what you actually need.
Mix some in a jug with water.

Damp the area before you pour it on and let it sit for an hour and wash as normal. It gets rid of any smell and also yellow stains. It's brilliant.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 15/09/2021 23:32

Vanish Oxi action. Soak for 6 hours.

I use bicarbonate AND vinegar. It froths up and does work, especially with a hot wash afterwards (if you can).
BlueberrySugar · 15/09/2021 23:38

@suredsun ohh! I'm going to try that, thanks!

shouldistop · 16/09/2021 07:46

Once you get the smell out, use bar soap instead of shower gel to wash with and you won't get any more smelly clothes.

purplesequins · 16/09/2021 07:51

it's distilled vinegar.
you can get big bottles in bargain type shops.
I add a little to the softener compartment for smelly stuff.

some clothes need a warmer wash and also using the longer cotton cycles help.

TheTeenageYears · 16/09/2021 08:03

Soak overnight in bleach if you can or soda crystals. Before you put in the machine squirt a good amount of dishwashing liquid on the inside of the armpit and give it a rub. Wash as normal. That broke down the deodorant/sweat stains on DS's school shirts.

twinkletoedelephant · 16/09/2021 08:06

I use dettol laundry sanitiser, stops the smell from teen ds. You use it instead of fabric softener

SpnBaby1967 · 16/09/2021 08:09

I'm so glad you posted this. DD school shirts stink despite washing.

I also have a karate Gi which has yellow stains in the arm pits which I can't get rid off (doesnt smell thankfully) and its its 100% canvas it's a menace to wash easily anyway.

Angel2702 · 16/09/2021 08:13

Bicarbonate and vinegar before washing then white vinegar in the softener drawer. If you can dry in the sun that also helps kill off any bacteria that is what causes the smell.

The smell is deodorant trapped on the clothes not sweat, someone told me?

White vinegar - wilko sell it in a handy spray bottle if you have one near you. They also sell good sized boxes of bicarb for cleaning

Insertfunnyname · 16/09/2021 08:17

White vinegar. I buy in bulk off Amazon. Add some to the softener drawer of every wash

The clothes do NOT smell of vinegar but it removes all BO smells.

For particularly smelly sports kit I add a glug to the detergent drawer too.

RampantIvy · 16/09/2021 08:22

Another vote for ditching shower gel in favour of bars of soap. Better for the environment as well.
