Gas oven help

I've only ever cooked with an electric oven. I've just moved house and the new house has a gas oven. I've tried my very best but I just can't seem to get very good results. I've tried leaving it for a good 20 mins plus to heat up first. I rotate the trays during cooking. But everything seems to take twice as long as it should and things like oven chips just never seem to get crisp. Is it me or is it the oven?! It is a stoves brand which I thought was fairly good? seems to be in good condition, it looks clean and well maintained, just doesn't cook very well! What else could I try or should I admit defeat and look for a new oven?

It sounds like the oven. I have always used gas and still prefer it, but I had a Stoves oven and after several years it just seemed to cook cooler and cooler. In the end I seemed to be doing everything on 9! We swapped to an electric fan eventually. Still don't like it as much - I think food tastes different - but at least it seems to cook to temperature.

Oh dear, I feared that would be the case. I guess I'll have to add new oven to the long list of things that need doing to this place. Thanks for the help.

My gas oven takes longer than 20mins to get to gas mark 6 or 7.

Sorry if this is the oven equivalent of teaching how to suck eggs, but I check by turning it down a bit and see if the volume changes.

Ah, I did wonder about heating up time. My electric oven was ready to go in 5 minutes so I'm not used to having to wait. This gas oven also doesn't seem to have any light or indication of when it's ready. When you say volume change...what do you mean? Blush

By volume changes, I mean my oven sounds louder when it's not up to temperature as it's (I assume) firing out more gas than when it's at the right temperature. So if you turn the dial down, you should be able to hear when it goes quiet - that's the current temperature.

I keep meaning to buy an oven thermometer to help when I bake cakes - that might help

Oh that makes sense, thanks for the tip. I'll see if that makes any difference.
