Mice in House

Hi. I've been finding black specs on my floor. If it's dirt I don't know how it got there as I hoover and wash the floor every week.

Could this be mouse droppings?

I don't know what that is, but those are definitely not mouse droppings.

SnaccidentsHappen · 08/09/2021 22:30

Maybe spider poop

GreyhoundG1rl · 08/09/2021 22:33

No, that's not mice.

mickeymousemini · 08/09/2021 22:33

Spiders - yikes!

Mice do very small hard droppings

mickeymousemini · 03/10/2021 21:38

Hi. Well I hoovered my laminate flooring yesterday and then cleaned it with a steam mop. Today I've got more of this "dirt" or whatever it is on my floor.

It's like flat pieces of dirt. I have no idea what it can be. Any suggestions please?

It looks like bits of mud off shoes ?

mickeymousemini · 03/10/2021 22:24

It does! I wear slippers around the flat though. I just can't figure out what it could be.

What colour are the soles of your slippers?

lljkk · 03/10/2021 22:41

backing falling off of floor matts?

TheOnlyMrsM · 03/10/2021 22:44

Anyone accessing your flat who shouldn't be? Do you need to check your security and change your door lock?

Donutdisaster · 03/10/2021 22:45

It's mice droppings

Heruka · 03/10/2021 22:48

Can you post a clearer pic?

Heruka · 03/10/2021 22:48

Are they always in the same area?

mickeymousemini · 04/10/2021 07:15

Sorry, I can't get very clear photos. The "dirt" is often just by the skirting board near the sink, on the kitchen floor and near the bathroom door.

If it's mice I don't know where they will be getting food from as everything is kept in the fridge or in sealed containers.

Sorry but it looks like mouse droppings, and the fact it’s near your sink suggests they are getting in around pipes (around kitchen or bathroom). This is really common.

In your situation I would: pull appliances, cupboard contents out etc to investigate (you won’t see the mice - they will hide, you might see dirty smear marks where their fur rubs against things or smell urine). Sometimes they live under the WM or fridge as it’s warm & provides a water source. Also look for crumbs/food source under your cooker & fridge

Look for any holes/gaps which need to be filled - with wire wool and then foam.

Lay poison before sealing everything (I like pest expert.com), and also use disinfectant or bleach in your kitchen/bathroom/floors as mice are incontinent

If you remove food source & access you will get rid of them - good luck!

mistlethrush · 04/10/2021 10:33

I would put some mouse traps down, with peanut butter to attract the mice. You can pick them up very cheaply in lots of places eg DIY stores. And then you'll know whether you do actually have mice or not! We got mice because the builders kept on leaving the front door open... we no longer have mice as we caught them!

mickeymousemini · 04/10/2021 12:20

Hi. Thanks for your replies. I don't think they are mice droppings as they are not pellet shaped - more flat than rounded.

However, I will put a piece of chocolate on the floor tonight and see if it gets nibbled. Then I will know for sure.

Doesn't look like mouse droppings to me. They look like tiny black sausages. With mice you also often get a little smell - once you know it, it's unmistakable.

They look like little bits of shoe rubber to me - is there a bit of your hoover that's a bit frazzled etc? What happens if you rub a bit with your fingers, does it disintegrate?

Do they appear overnight? It might just be dust and dirt blowing across your floor and ending up there. Even if you clean often, you can get bits and bobs.

Notcontent · 04/10/2021 15:16

Sorry - this is not a pleasant suggestion - but if you pick it up with some tissue and smell it then that might help with identifying it….

lljkk · 05/10/2021 05:35

LOTS of mice in the road as I was driving home the other night. Not sure what that means. Were there always lots of mice in country roads in October but I never realised before.

And in our extension roof. I have a hunch numbers are high this year.

But OP's pic still doesn't look like mice droppings.

mickeymousemini · 05/10/2021 07:15

Well the chocolate hasn't been nibbled
... yet.
