How often do you clean toys?

I was round a friends the other day and she told me she 'miltoned' her dd's (2 yrs) toys every week (and she's got lots!)
I give some of my dd's toys a wipe over with a bit of kitchel towel on the odd occasion, but I think she meant all the toys...is it me, the amount of revolting toys they come into contact at playgroups etc, does it matter?

serinsingingcarols,

My sis passsed on a bucket of lego a few years ago. There was something horrid in it (we think half a sandwich which had rotted away to liquid form).

I shoved them all in my washing machine on a delicates wash, with an old teatowel.
Made a funny noise, but came out lovely and clean.

I once knew someone who would only have plastic toys so they could be sterilised each week. This was her PFB, of course.

If Lego does need to be cleaned (it does seem to attract grot) either put it in a pillow case in the washing machine, along with a towel or in those mesh delicates bag in the dishwasher. It's not something I've done myself but have heard others say they do it.

I wash soft bears occasionally (when they really need it).

Don't wash anything else. Ever. And DS (4) and DD (2) are still here to tell the tale .

I have washed lego/megabloks and k'nex that we inherited - one lot I washed 3 times, but that was to try and get rid of the cigarette smell, didn't work - then I just left it outside for a week

Life is too short to worry about washing/cleaning the mounds of plastic/wood etc that children amass in the first 5 years of life. My goodness, much better to spend the time playing with the toys with the child, rather than cleaning the toys.

BTW I once met a couple who insisted on wiping down their kitchen work surfaces, cooker, sink etc with Milton after every meal, and then again before they started preparing food again .

They were new to our area, and I had been about to invite them to dinner, but having learnt that, I dare not.

Good grief no way would I be sterilising them once a week!

I have been known (rarely) to put all the bath toys in the dishwasher if they look gungy.

FrostyGlassSlipper · 04/12/2007 13:21

I dont unless they are sticky or sicky. Either way they go in the dishwasher or washing machine.
