Housemoving tips

I'm moving house in 2 weeks to my 1st home that will be owned solely by me after a nightmare divorce.

I have forgotten how to move properly.

Can anyone share tips on the best way to transport clothes etc.

I have previously bought wardrobe boxed but they were expensive and I'm not sure worth it.

Remove drawers, with clothes in tact and wrap with cling film or similar. You can just slip the drawers back in to the unit.

@Suzi888 thanks that's a great idea.

Really hoping to declutter and move half of my clothes.

A lot of pre DC clothes are no longer worn, fit in with my lifestyle of work clothes and leggings lol

Elastic band around a bunch of hangers and put a black sack over

For bedding: fold the corners of fitted sheets over the duvet/quilt and roll up. You can just put them onto new beds. I’ve found it helps kids settle to have their beds smell “right” in the new house. Make the beds as soon as you arrive as you won’t have energy later!

If you have to take furniture apart sellotape the screws and Allen key to the underside.

Thank you great tips re the elastic band and bags!

I thankfully have removal people coming to dismantle furniture and re assemble. It's just me so I don't fancy my chances of doing it alone lol

Label any box with where stuff lives right now in this house. That way if you need to find something before you have unpacked if you know where to find it in your current house you can now find it in a box.

Label the boxes on every side. I colour coded mine, one colour per room, I just used clear packing tape and a tape gun to attach them. Say kitchen stuff was yellow, I would write on a yellow square of paper "1"(nicked coloured paper from the children's stash) and then in a notebook what was in that box, I then put the notebook into my handbag so I didn't lose it. I wrote which cupboard it came from ie pan cupboard. Then stuck that x 4 on the box.

When I got the keys I simply put the coloured paper onto the architrave of each room so the removal men knew where to put it. In fairness my things went into storage for a few weeks so this helped massively with the move.

Remember to take meter readings when you arrive at the new house and old one if needed. Locate your stop cock in case you need to turn off the water too.

Good luck with the move.

I also had storage and moved a lot of my stuff into it , then was able to retrieve and sort as I went , depends on if you have a car to be able to do this and the time available
