Fruitflies - biblical plague proportion infestation!

Millions of the buggers I’m the kitchen!

I haven’t found the source (I assume there is a mouldy apple down the back of a cupboard) but o just can’t get rid of them.

I have tried my usual vinegar and washing up liquid in a class but they seem to like it!

Any ideas?

Fly paper - looks gross but will get rid of loads of the little buggers and really quite quickly

I believe they come on bananas, I've heard anyway! The eggs are laid on them and when you open the plastic packaging they hatch and you can't get rid of them. You have to open them, throw the wrapping away, and wash the bananas. Obviously, if you don't buy bananas it's not that! 🤣

Fly paper works here too, they do look grim but they really work.

I have some little flower stickers on my windows that kill flies. Presume they’d work on fruit flies too if they get anywhere near the windows. Maybe rub a bit of fruit on the window to lure them in?!

Clear Dettol (the lime & mint smells lovely). Spray around the kitchen. Come back in 5 mins & most of them will be dead. Works on big flies as well. They are attracted to anything like bread. Get a bread bin if you don't have one yet & put all bread/cake items in it. Make sure all flour bags are re sealed or put into sealable bags as well.

You really need the find the source as they multiply REALLY fast.
The vinegar in a glass, have you put cling film over the top, with a few holes? So they can get in but not out.

Also, check your sink drain, or shove a kettle of hot water down as they can live there too.

I had them last week, they were on a plant in the kitchen, could it be that?

cricketmum84 · 10/08/2021 20:55

Fruit fly ninja from Amazon.

We had loads of the little gits. Put two fruit fly ninja bottles out in the kitchen and they are all dead and floating in them. Muahahahaha

Honestly first thing I have ever found that properly works. And if you have prime they will be with you by tomorrow.

Bleach down the kitchen sink drain and overflow will probably sort it. Check your houseplants too (but don’t bleach ‘em).

I put a piece of fruit in a bowl with cling film on top and a pin prick hole. They can smell their way in but they can’t get out. If you’re bothered you can release them humanely away from the house.

But you need to track down the source. Keep all fruit in the fridge for these few weeks. It’s not great but it’s necessary this time of year. Give your plants a couple of taps to see if anything moves. Clean down bins. Sort out drains. And start hunting under and behind cupboards.
