New duvet silk or wool (or stick with down)?

HasaDigaEebowai · 01/08/2021 13:25

As the title says really.

DS2 needs a new duvet since his is very old and all the feathers have moved to the edges and clumped. I've literally had it for about 25 years and so its served its time.

The plan is that DS2 will have our existing goose down duvet and we will get a new one. I've read over the years about wool duvets and silk duvets and Im tempted but they're expensive.

Which is better, wool, silk or down?

I love my baavet wool duvet, I bought it about ten years ago and it's still in fantastic condition. I got a medium weight one from the bargain corner and use it all year round - I add a blanket on very cold nights and just use a sheet on very hot nights, but for the majority of the year it keeps me just the right temperature.

BridgetInHerBravery · 01/08/2021 13:38

Wool. Love mine, best duvet ever!

lifeinlimbo2020 · 01/08/2021 13:39

My wool duvet is one of my best purchases ever. Stays on all year. Warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Not too thick so the bed looks nice when it's made too.

HasaDigaEebowai · 01/08/2021 13:39

Does the wool help to stop you overheating? It seems counter intuitive that it would but it seems to be part of the sales pitch?

It's brilliant. Never overheat. Always have 100% cotton duvet covers too which helps.

SwayingInTime · 01/08/2021 13:46

I like my wool ones best, I get two in one ones and they can be washed in the machine easily. I slightly prefer the feel of feathers but prioritise the easy care of wool.

HasaDigaEebowai · 01/08/2021 13:47

Well wool has the most votes so far!

Silk for me! But we have quite a warm house

Summerhillsquare · 01/08/2021 13:57

It's really counterintuitive that wool is cool in summer. I mean, I wouldn't dream of wearing a wool jumper or socks just now.

bilbodog · 01/08/2021 13:57

Weve been sleeping under wool for 30 years - love it? From the wool room.

PurBal · 01/08/2021 14:03

Wool!! Love it

AtticusHoysAnus · 01/08/2021 14:24

Baavet are superb.

We've got a summer and winter one.

They definitely help regulate heat if you run hot.

AtticusHoysAnus · 01/08/2021 14:27

Oh and second the bargain corner.

Their quality control is so strict, if it's slightly over or under filled or doesn't have perfect straight stitching it won't be sold at full price
Both of ours were from the bargain bin but had them years now, can't see what's wrong with them.

I have a silk one and it is lovely, it doesn’t give the puffy duvet appearance but it’s gota lovely calming effect like sleeping under a weighted blanket but cooler. I have a warm house so I’m not sure how well it would hold up in northern winters, but it does me all year round.

Scottishflower65 · 01/08/2021 14:36

Baavet here too - with a silk cover.

HasaDigaEebowai · 01/08/2021 15:43

Right I think Im going for an all season wool superking duvet (I have to have two duvets but in separate duvet covers due to menopause) with bamboo sheets. Thanks everyone

Wool definitely! I've just bought a light wool one from Woolroom.

It's brilliant. Unlike feathers or synthetics its fully breathable and I've had no night sweats so far since I've had it. I love a feather duvet but the birds are treated terribly. Wool is warm, breathable and in abundance!

SweatyBetty20 · 02/08/2021 17:17

I’ve got a wool one from Fogarty - it’s fantastic. I’m going through the hot flush stage and it keeps me cool in summer and warm in winter. On REALLY hot heatwave type nights I might switch to a sheet, but there have been only a couple a year. I think it cost me around £50 from Dunelm a couple of years ago?

TerribleCustomerCervix · 02/08/2021 17:29

We have the light/summer wool duvet from Woolroom, Which is excellent- just the right weight, keeps us from overheating but also cosy on cooler summer nights.

We have a down winter weight duvet for Sept-April, but my sister has ordered the Woolroom all seasons duvet and I’m looking forward to see how thick the winter set up is.

colouringindoors · 02/08/2021 17:31

That's the one I have! It's perfect for the summer.

I have the 13.5 tog from Devon Duvets. It's superb. Year round, with a blanket to hand in winter if needed.

I do like the cosy feeling of down, but I just get too hot, unfortunately.

GoodbyePorpoiseSpit · 02/08/2021 18:07

Also got a 14 tog from Devon duvets and love it!

Grin They are so kind and helpful too. I rang for advice on what to buy ( menopausal woes) and the lady was so helpful- and sympathetic!

Confusedandshaken · 03/08/2021 07:48

I use silk duvets. They are light and non-bulky so make changing a king size duvet cover much less of a chore. In the winter I sometimes supplement it with a light weight cotton quilt for extra warmth but that's probably only 10-20 nights a year.

LadyEloise1 · 14/08/2021 20:56

I hated our silk one so much we don't use it anymore.
It's just so flat and I didn't notice it's so called miracle qualities of being warm in winter and cool in summer

Now our silk duvet covers.....
They are brilliant.
