No washing up bowl?

SantaMonicaPier · 31/07/2021 16:23

Just finishing off our new kitchen and we have a 1.5 stainless steel sink under mounted beneath granite. I almost can't bear to stick a plastic bowl in but I've never used a sink without a bowl. If we just use the sink is there anything I can use to prevent scratching? I've seen the base liners but assume the sides are likely to get scratched. This sink needs to last as long as the granite as removing it would be a pain so I need to take care of it! Thanks in advance

Get a washing up bowl and put it in a cupboard for the times you can't bear to look at it.

Anything I use in my sink is stored away after I'm done with it. Just do that and you'll be happy.

I have never used a washing up bowl and don't really see the need (but I come from a European country where washing up bowls are not a thing). It's ok to have some few scratches in the sink, they will not be very noticeable I promise. At the end of the day it will last you maaaaany years, it's inevitable it will get some wear and tear.
Also, if you have a dishwasher the amount of washing up is probably minimal?

I don't own a washing up bowl. I would only have one if I had just a single sink. I don't see the point of them otherwise!

Dalooah · 31/07/2021 18:49

Lol! Never used a washing up bowl, literally have no idea what it's for. Think you'll be ok using the sink without one. As far as I can tell my sink isn't scratched? 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

The 'point of them' is that many houses in the U.K. don't have a utility room do sinks get used for 'other stuff' like washing hands/football boots/laundry/& far more revolting things. You can either thoroughly clean the sink each time you need to do dishes or use a washing up bowl.

Lots of houses only have single bowls too so being able to tip cup dregs, rinsing water etc down the sink is a bonus

Dishes don't get broken so easily.

@SantaMonicaPier

I bought a brilliant 'soft' one from Hobbycraft of all places. It gets used, washed, rinsed & put in the under the sink cupboard. I can't stand doing dishes straight in the sink.

Aquamarine1029 · 31/07/2021 18:53

I've never used one and my sink doesn't have any scratches.

SantaMonicaPier · 01/08/2021 08:17

Thanks all. Incredibly helpful. Much as I'd prefer to put a bowl away between uses the kids will be constantly filling up the sink so I'll look at some liners and hope the sides don't get scratched (we do use cast iron pots but I think they can go in the dishwasher). Thanks again

I've never used a washing up bowl. And I don't mind the idea that my sink won't look pristine in a decade's time. However, although I do wash some items by hand we have a dishwasher... Perhaps a bowl would be handy for collecting all the bits and outsides throughout the day leaving the sink available for other uses.

MrsEko · 01/08/2021 08:42

I've never used one and I've never seen anyone else use one either. Not in real life, just on TV. And I've lived in loads of places.

I don't know if my sink is scratched though. Probably it is but it's never occurred to me that this was a thing to worry about. Shock

DinosaurDiana · 01/08/2021 08:43

I wouldn’t be without a washing up bowl.

TheDogsMother · 01/08/2021 08:51

How about this. The brand is Joseph and you can reconfigure it according to where the plug hole is

They’re pricy but you can get stainless steel washing up bowls

aiwblam · 01/08/2021 12:53

I'd just tell everyone in the family not to treat the sink like savages (ie fling sharp or heavy stuff) and then just not worry about it.

Comedycook · 01/08/2021 12:54

I'm sure I've seen collapsible washing up bowls

LidoLady · 01/08/2021 13:10

We've recently stopped using the washing up bowl and don't miss it at all. I can't believe we've used one all these years, I've absolutely no idea what the benefit of it was.

RevolutionRadio · 01/08/2021 13:12

Washing up bowl allows for water to still go down the drain if the tap is left on as you don't need to put the plug in.

Apparently they also keep the water hotter for longer than just using a sink.

RevolutionRadio · 01/08/2021 13:13

They also stop the sink being scratched

LovelaceBiggWither · 01/08/2021 13:15

I've never used a washing up bowl in my life and never worried about scratching a sink.

Do NOT put seasoned cast iron in the dishwasher it will fuck it up beyond redemption.

Wombat64 · 01/08/2021 13:17

Yep, it'll also dull the enamel.
