Cleaning taps with a "brushed brass" finish - anyone know what's safe?

Hi all,

Installed a few of these lush taps in our recent house refurb:
www.drench.co.uk/p/vellamo-twist-brushed-brass-basin-mixer-tap-waste

Around the base they are starting to blacken/tarnish and I've got the fear that even something like bicarb could damage the finish.

If anyone has these and can recommend what to use on them I'd be massively grateful! I'm not having much luck with Drench customer services who are still on Covid limited contact...

Thanks in advance!

I’ve got a brushed gold kitchen tap which can only be cleaned with water and buffed with a dry cloth, it specifically said never to use bathroom cleaner on the info that came with it. It’s only very recently been installed so I haven’t noticed any marks on it yet. It’s possible/ likely that a brushed brass tap might have similar issues, so all I would say is try to dry them off after use and don’t use anything too harsh to clean them.

I use an e glass pol;ishing cloth to clean my copper version

I have similar. It is ok so far. But the plug hole is now very black tarnished.

dettol power and pure bathroom spray on the plughole.

Ooh thanks @womaninatightspot I'll try that on my taps then! (Will start at the back first just in case...)

My e-cloth wasn't shifting it even with scalding hot water. Really useful to have a product recommend!

How did you get on @WoolyMammoth55, we have exactly the same issue!

Jellybean23 · 10/10/2022 23:13

Try Astonish oven and pan cleaner. But wipe in the same direction that the brass is 'brushed'. The trouble with brass is that it'll always tarnish.

@AsItWas22 well the original marks were damage to the finish, NOT tarnish.

There's no cleaning product that works because there's no dirt to clean - it's just the brass coating lifting off :(

I'm trying to get replacements/refund out of Drench with no success so far. Pretty clear that the taps aren't fit for purpose since the brass coating started lifting off 18 months after they were installed.

The problem is that the cost of removing the current taps, installing new ones and making good, will be quite substantial - so even if we got the replacement/refund we'd still be very out of pocket vs if we'd just bought bog-standard chrome ones in the first place.

Pretty gutted, honestly. They looked so lovely for the first 5 minutes! But definitely not worth the hassle.
