Hi there

I have been noticing very small black fleas especially near my cat's food, littler tray and my flowers. I have put down bowls of vinegar, honey etc...and hope i drown them lol.
I would use insecticide but i havey 18 month old and a kitten. Left a message with my housing association as they have a pest control team.
I have wooden floors so not like i can hoover floors. Any good products to use? I just want to bleach my whole house down! Any advice appreciated. P.S my kitten has recently been flead by the vet.

Does your hoover not work on hard floors? Most do

Apple35 · 27/07/2021 20:42

@Chocolatebuttercream I just sweep and have a hard floor mop.

Ah OK no worries.

Are you sure they are fleas and not fruit flies or something?

Sunshine4you · 27/07/2021 21:03

I had this once after my twins were born and nothing helped has to call in a pest team to spray the house while we went out for the day. Job done.

Apple35 · 27/07/2021 21:51

Yes a cat - I just gave birth so it had slipped my mind to do his routine flea treatment.

Pest control will use insecticides! But if they are coming there is no point buying more yourselves. Fleas tend to lay eggs at the edges of rooms, where skirting meets floor, and at bottom edges of soft furnishings. When we've had pest controllers round they sprayed stuff round these places and we went out for a while. It takes a week or two to work though. Newly hatching fleas will continue jump onto your kitten so you need to keep treating the kitten for fleas.

Also check everywhere your kitten has gone, especially edges and where there is carpet or soft furnishings, as they will be much harder to spot. We moved into a terribly infested house and had to have our whole house treated in the end. But ever since we've been able to catch them early and eliminated them with a can of Indorex.

Fleas need somewhere to lay their eggs - it will probably be soft furnishings and carpets. they will be hatching out regularly and jumping on pets (or humans to feed). You can control the numbers by treating your pets and vacuuming/washing everything that might have eggs. Comb your cat every day - have a bowl of water to drown live fleas - if you comb out dark specks, put them on white paper and dampen and squash. If you see red, they're 'flea dirts'.

By combing your cat every day, you can see if the problem is getting better or worse. Generally, household sprays etc from the vet will deal with them much better than anything from a supermarket. If you don't get on top of it, that won't be enough.

Hoover your hard floors and the skirting boards. It will help. As well a sofas etc.

dementedpixie · 28/07/2021 22:46

Are you sure they are fleas? They don't usually just wander round the place.

Are you treating your cats and what with? If it's fleas the treated cats will help kill them too

Apple35 · 28/07/2021 22:52

Hey everyone. They are flies and the pest control guy thinks we may have had a leak behind the bath which has caused damp and caused this. We are getting investigations soon.
