How to remove stained limescale in toilet

I got some great advice from this board about getting rid of bathroom mould so I though I'd ask here again!

Some members of my family have a terrible habit of leaving urine to linger in the toilet unflushed. We're in a very hard water area so a lot of limescale and the limescale in the family toilet is now badly stained. I've scrubbed and scrubbed but to no avail. Does anyone know of any miracle treatment to get rid of the staining below the water line?

Vilakal spray worked for me. Bleach only works of tiny amount of staining and cover up not remove. Vinegar and bicarbonate made little difference. You do need get rid of water first and leave good few hours.

csiaddict · 27/07/2021 19:35

You need something really acidic - I've bought hydrochloric acid from Boots before (plastic orange bottle). Tip about half a bottle down the toilet, leave overnight. Scrub with toilet brush. Works really well.

DW40 , spray it leave for a hour then use loo brush to remove the stain

Geordieoldgirl · 27/07/2021 19:37

Domestos bleach in the white bottle works wonders.

IsItTimeForGinYet · 27/07/2021 19:37

Get all the water out with a sponge. Then put a fair amount of the black bottle domestos which is for limescale. Leave it for a while. Then scrub with a brush and flush. Works miracles. But definitely needs to be used undiluted when it's really bad. Makes all the difference.

@AlfonsoTheMango

Citric acid crystals. You can buy a kilo on Amazon for a couple of quid. Dump a load in the toilet bowl. You can also use citric acid to descale kettles and get rid of limescale around taps.
This. .but I empty the bowl. ,fill with boiling water tip in citric acid leave overnight. I live in a very hard water area and this is the best solution cheap and quite environmentally good I believe!

A pumice stone really works but keep it wet

movingadviceneeded · 27/07/2021 19:43

Black harpic just worked on ours, we have a light sleeper toddler and don't flush at night.....

tootingbeclido · 27/07/2021 19:48

Also citric acid through the washing machine once a month stop limescale stuffing it up and will descale the kettle. .its brilliant stuff

sleepyhoglet · 27/07/2021 20:20

If it's really hard that it's formed a crust then I can help! First scoop out the water from the bowl. I used sandwich bags to do this! Then with gloves on pick off the scale! If it's not so hard then pour a bottle of viakal in

adeleh · 27/07/2021 20:22

I use the Harpic tablet. I put in two and try to leave it overnight.

Leaveitonthefloordrobe · 27/07/2021 21:14

Thanks for all the suggestions! I've never thought of removing the water before attempting to clean before so that's a great call. I've got the black harpic which I've out down a couple of times but, frustratingly, it's never in there for long before someone decides to go to the toilet again! Even overnight 🤦 So I think one day when I've got the day to myself I'll remove the water and tackle it.

Removing the water makes all the difference! Doesn't actually take too long either. Good luck!

Throughabushbackwards · 27/07/2021 21:57

Citric acid crystals really will work. Rates as my "best ever MN housekeeping tip".

splishsplashsploshsplishsplash · 27/07/2021 22:05

Black harpic 100% my toilet looked brand new after and I'm not exaggerating!

Cheerstoyou · 27/07/2021 22:05

I’ve used a pumice stone before, that works but took ages and it just felt gross sticking my hand down the toilet even though I had a rubber glove on!

ShakespearesSisters · 27/07/2021 22:15

I have the same issue here. I've got proclean macerator cleaner for our saniflow but its amazing at cleaning the limescale off the loo. I use it in all of them now. Leave it for at least an hour and then a scrub with a brush. Sparkly clean.
I also use power zone limescale remover tablets. They work almost as well.

TolkiensFallow · 27/07/2021 22:18

Tip a whole bottle of vinegar down the loo and leave over night. The next night do half a bottle of bleach, then do another bottle of vinegar the next night followed by the rest of the bleach.

I once moved into a house that was black below the water line and this worked. Just cheap bleach and cheap value brand vinegar.

Fastforwardtospring · 27/07/2021 22:22

Harpic tablets - leave overnight, then just use the loo brush to take off in the morning. They are the best, don’t go for an alternative - must be the Harpic ones!

Travielkapelka · 27/07/2021 22:48

SPIRIT OF SALTS

leave overnight, quick scrub with a brush and a sparkling loo. Honestly it’s magic

lpchill · 27/07/2021 22:58

Pumice stone. Helps scape it off without damaging. This was after I tried everything else including the Coke method

thelegohooverer · 28/07/2021 12:03

Definitely the harpic tablets and not just the black harpic bottle.

Can you organise a family day out to give it time to work? Grin

Kimblebee19 · 07/08/2021 18:08

If its really bad definitely Kilrock. Pour it down, leave overnight and just flush it away in the morning. Miracle stuff. None of this getting rid of the water and scrubbing/scraping malarkey. Harpic tablets etc. wont touch it if really bad in my experience.

And then for ongoing maintenance use the Domestos Ultra White bleach (comes in a white bottle) - absolutely brilliant compared to all the other loo cleaners I've tried, that generally just leave blue stains stuck to the limescale and need a load of scrubbing. I won't use anything else but this one now.

Sugarandtime · 07/08/2021 18:10

Citric acid powder left in the bowl for a few hours and the. Scrubbed with a toilet brush
