Bread makers - anyone got one?

paolosgirl · 25/11/2007 20:59

If so - what kind, and does it knead the dough for you?

Or are they a waste of money?

I've been moaning about the cost of bread (£1 a loaf ) and the amount we get through a week, and now DH thinks a bread maker is the future

I'm thinking of investing in one too. My neighbour made us a white loaf in her's the other day and it was yummy. The kids ate it on and off all day long and thought it was way beter than the stuff that goes mouldy in a day and sticks to the roof of your mouth!

It's good too that you can set it to make the bread overnight and also makes cakes and tea bread etc in it.

LyraSilvertongue · 25/11/2007 21:07

I've got one and it's fab. There's nothing better than eating hot, freshly baked bread with loads of butter
You just put all the ingredients in and it mixes, kneads, rises, kneads again, rises again and bakes all without you having to do a thing. Mine also makes (loaf-shaped) cakes and jam.
I don't use it as often as I used to but it's there when I want it.

paolosgirl · 25/11/2007 21:09

Lyra - what make is yours?

Pay the extra and get a Panasonic
It is utterly brill

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 25/11/2007 21:12

Panasonic, Panasonic, and Panasonic.

I haven't had a duff loaf yet from it.

Worth the cost.

here

LyraSilvertongue · 25/11/2007 21:14

Mine is this one.
I think you can buy them for about £30. It has a rapid function which allows you to make a quick loaf without the hours of rising but the results aren't as good.

FairyOnTopOfTheChristmasTree · 25/11/2007 21:15

I love mine too. As well as bread, I regularly make pizza dough in it which makes delicious fresh pizzas for us and DD

LyraSilvertongue · 25/11/2007 21:15

Wow, the Panasonic's expensive. But it does have a raisin dispenser...

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 25/11/2007 21:18

Go for the Panasonic.

It has the best features, It is the best looking, and the best made. It's sooooo worth the money. And no I don't work for Panasonic

Oh, and it comes with loads of recipes.

paolosgirl · 25/11/2007 21:20

Just told DH about the breadmaker feedback . The Panasonic's a bit expensive - I was thinking more along the lines of about £30/ish.

Mine is an LG - it was about £40 about 5 years ago.

Bread is yummy - but not cheaper than shop bought really.

But you get nice bread with no nasty chemicals.

Mine can make dough too which is yummy for pizzas, or for rolls.

paolosgirl · 25/11/2007 21:25

Is that right about the price of breadmaker v. shop bought, isaid? I was hoping we'd see our bread bill slashed now there are 5 of us...

OP posts:
moondog · 25/11/2007 21:26

Daren't get one although am sorely tempted.
I feel arse widen just thinking about it...

Blu · 25/11/2007 21:34

Think of all that spelt flour bread, Moondog...17 times more vitamins and minerals than standard flour bread!

3babesfull · 25/11/2007 21:37

Definitely Panasonic - fantastic. Some breadmakers make the bread taste really sweet but this is great.
White,
70% wholemeal
50% wholemeal

Fruity bread
Ciabatta
loads of others!

Yup, if you are a bread fiend it is a nightmare! As it contains no preservatives it has to be eaten within a few days but i don't often find this a problem!

Like all gadgets you may use it for weeks on end and then not for a while but I always come back to it - unlike other gadgets!

Timer means you can wake up to the smell of fresh bread!!

Sidge · 25/11/2007 21:38

I've got one and tend to go through phases of using it. I make loads of bread some weeks, then none on others!

We spend a fortune on shop bread, probably a fiver a week, as 5 of us eat lots. It is cheaper to make it yourself but it took me a bit of trial and error to get it just right so that cost more.

And fresh bread with butter and jam......... mmmmmmm

LyraSilvertongue · 25/11/2007 21:40

I reckon it is cheaper, if you write off the initial outlay for the breadmaker.
All you need is flour (cheap) yeast, butter (a little), salt, sugar, warm water per loaf. You'll probably get at least four loaves per bag of flour.

Mistymoo · 25/11/2007 22:11

We got a cheapy Bifinet(?) from LIDL's for about £30.

We had a more expensive Russell Hobbs and this is way better. Twin paddles for mixing as opposed to the RH single. Makes bigger loaves too.

There's no comparison with shop bread - this tastes way better. Cheap shop bread is always cheaper than machine bread but Gluten free bread is WAY cheaper making it yourself.

Definitely worthwhile.

Dont scrimp on the flour quality

LyraSilvertongue · 25/11/2007 22:14

I pay over £1 for a loaf. Machine definitely cheaper than that.

PaulaYatesbiggestfan · 25/11/2007 22:14

'the bread taste sweet '...ewwwww
i find that comment really offputting

paolosgirl · 25/11/2007 22:19

Mmmm....def.going to get one

DH is just too good to me really. Not only am I being 'allowed' to get a bread maker, I've now got Skype as of tonight. Christams has come early in my house, girls!

Panasonic. Great. Pays for itself (there are 5 of us, kids sarnies, blahdiblah). Good pizza dough too, and you know what went into it, unlike all those weird ingredients you find in shop bread and pizza.

Lidl strong bread flour is good. But even if you buy Dove's organic, it still works out cheaper -- I did crunch the numbers when we first bought the breadmaker. Can't remember exactly how the sums went, but it definitely won.

And I have no other kitchen gadgets, not even a microwave. But am now considering a yoghurt maker as we get through pints of that as well.

Bewilderbeast · 25/11/2007 22:23

I have the panasonic, I love it. My mum has the same one and has had it for 6 or 7 years, it is still going strong and she makes a loaf every day.

hippipotami · 25/11/2007 22:32

We have had the panasonic for 18 months now, and make a loaf every day. It is fab! Cannot recommend it highly enough, and this from someone whose kitchen gadgets usually gather dust at the back of the cupboard!

morningglory · 25/11/2007 22:47

I have the Panasonic DS-253. It is great. I despise stale bread, and with the breadmaker, we have fresh bread every day. I make a mixture of spelt/wholemeal usually, which I'd be hard pressed to find at the supermarket. On weekends, I make a cinnamon-sultana bread, which DH and DS love. I've even made brioche in it, which was not bad.

If you don't like the shape of the bread or the paddle mark at the bottom, you can always do all steps in the breadmaker, then transfer to the oven to bake.

Worth the purchase.
